If this is the place I do have one question....has anyone ever used a no ground antenna base(this one is made by firestik) when mounting on the front fiberglass of the cab?? Does it work as well as the grounded plane antennas??

Thanks
Jim

jim hutch, try doing an advanced search for "swr" or even "firestik". You will find some good tips and set-up info.

Jim,

It's listed as "Subcategory: CB & Ham Radios" under the "Technology, Internet, Cell Phones, Creative Solutions, etc." forum. Or, you can click this link and it'll go right to it.

If your antenna is the one I think it is, it has a coil at the top...it appears as a slight bulge in the fiberglass. This is a top loaded antenna and is designed to not need a ground plane mount.

I have used them for both Ham Radio on 10 meters and CB too. They are fairly effective antennas.

I would mount it so that the top of the antenna is just above the roof line (on a Class A)or on the bumper (on a Class C), but support it near the top with a non metalic clip to prevent it from banging against the body of the motorhome.

On a class A Pace Arrow, I had installed a "Fire Stick" top loaded antenna. It was mounted on the left front side (side mount) and I anchored it into the steel frame of the motorhome. I had the antenna up high enough so the the entire loading coil was above the roof of the coach. The rig worked great and did tune in faily flat on SWR.

The trick is to get a good antenna...not a cheapie and mount it properly.

Agree with the above, just make sure the recommended minimun 2/3rds of the antenna is above everything surrounding it.
