Ceiling mount TV replacement

Has anyone ever mounted a flatscreen from the ceiling to replace a top, center cabinet heavy TV? If so how did you find a secure place (studs?) to make the ceiling connection. I know the weight is much less, but still there is some weight and lowering it to viewing position over the years will add some wear and tear. I'm assuming a piano hinge figures in the mount somewhere. Can you put screws into the flatscreen frame without destroying the TV?

I finally gave up trying to locate such a mount that would fit the MH. I built a top-hinged door for that cabinet and used gas struts to help raise the door and hold it open. After building was complete I realized I should have devised a way to hold the TV against the ceiling while unneeded/traveling, but haven't acted on that idea.

I have been trying to figure out how to do this for some time. Would you have pictures of your tv installation to share? When I looked at the back of the tv I couldn't see where I could mount the door to the tv.

Most LED tv's have standard spaced screw holes on the back used to attach TV Mounts.

Run the screws through the door or buy a fixed mount.

That's exactly how i did mine, drill holes in the door to match the pattern on the back of the TV. It takes a bit of measuring-twice, to insure I got the holes in the right place the first time. I bought the support gas struts and mounts from a local RV supply store.

I made a new cabinet to match the new TV size and mounted it to a piece of plywood with a piano hinge from a 2 X 2 across the top. That left the whole cabinet behind the TV for storage. Got it done a few days before we traded the Dutch Star off.

So as I understand it, no one attaches a hinge directly to the TV, but attaches the TV to a board/door and attaches the board/door to a frame or enclosure with a piano hinge? What is the thickness of the panel the TV is mounted on? Are the gas struts strong enough to reliably lift, say a 32" set or would it be safer to mount a hinge on the side of the panel and open sideways?

There are many pictures of solutions on the Web and probably in this forum.

Here are a few from my $25 solution:

I did not take pictures of my project. I first installed a header in the top of the now-vacant opening. Next I made a 1/2" maple plywood door and attached it to the header with brass door hinges (they are stronger than piano hinge IMO). I bought 2 gas struts from a local RV supply store and mounting hardware. I think the struts are 30# lift, 7" long. I now wish I'd bought 40# struts though. I think I mounted them backwards, but I did so to eliminate them mounting to the door down low and becoming a head knocker when the door is open.
