Back in 06 Willa and I were at mile post 108 in Utah and the right rear went BOOM. Trust me, Utah is a most beautiful state and at 108 you are in the middle of nothing. No phone service on my cell. I said SHUX real loud....
I drove the pick up back up to some high ground and still had ''NO SERVICE''.. I said SHUX AGAIN ... (it didnt help)
In desperation I punched in 911 and a County Sheriff lady asked me what my emergency was and how could she help. The short story is that she dispatched a wrecker service to change my tire and asked if we needed anything else. I will not go into the ''service'' provided by the people that came out to change the tire. that is another story for another time.
The point is that if you have NO SIGNAL and NO SERVICE and you need help try dialing 911 and see who you get. I have used it twice with a NO SERVICE SITUATION and I got the Highway patrol or the County Sheriff both times ....
This information is free. It may save your life sometime...........

By Law 9-1-1 is an "Air Time Free" call.. In your case the phone could find a signal however your service provider has no roaming agreement with that provider.

Federal law requires they process your 9-1-1 call though

And in most states, a flat tire, on the side of the road, on an "out of area" vehicle (IE: visitor from another state) Is considered 9-1-1 worthy (unless there is a 3-1-1 option) and the dispatcher (IE: ME) will help you get a tire service out

The exception is when you are at home and can call your regular tire guy direct

But then.. You have service

(OH, and Chicago where the idiot 9-1-1 operator read me the riot act for calling in a car broke down IN THE MIDDLE LANE of the expressway)

(I won't tell you how many people can get killed by a car broke down in the middle lane (I don't know what's possible.. But one in Farmington HIlls, MI took 7 lives one night and did it in less than 20 mintues)

Also remember that a text message uses much less time to transmit and will go through when you have a second of coverage while driving around looking for a voice signal. Arrange with a friend before you go that if they get a text message with a location from you, to call the highway patrol and relay that info.

We use this procedure all the time when doing Boy Scouts hikes in remote locations.
