Thom traveled for work for almost 7 yrs going from one end of the US to the other from the north to the south and from one end of Canada to the other. He traveled 90% to 95% of the time.
In quite a few places that he had to work he would walk in talking to work on the phone. The people would then ask "How do you have a signal? Nothing works around here. Oh wait .... you have Verizon don't you?" Almost every place he want to he heard that.
We've gone all over the US ourselves in a car, truck and RV. Without question Verizon is the one that works. Thom's mom and dad had Straight Talk, Trac Phone, Net 10 and several others over the last few years. We finally got them a pay as you go on the Verizon network. That one from Verizon is the only that now connects them no matter what for them when they travel from MI to FL and back.

We don't travel long distances from home very often but our Consumer Cellular has worked very well for us. They use the AT&T towers/system so wherever there is AT&T, you also have CC available. I like the fact that there are no strings attached anywhere with them. You can change up or down before the month is out with data, voice or text.

I also have a Wilson Sleek signal booster that will amplify any voice/data signal I get and I also use it with my smart phone and laptop to get wifi connectivity if not available locally. I turn my phone into a portable hotspot and connect my laptop when camping.

If you travel all over the place, then Verizon seems to have the most towers/coverage. If they have a pay-as-you-go option, then that would be a good choice.

I did a lot of research. I had Verizon for over 10 years, and hated paying the price, but loved the network.

I found Page Plus Cellular. They are a Verizon reseller, and use only Verizon Network. 1200 mintes , 3000 texts, 500 mb data(3g only). It has not dropped any calls and coverage has been great, Ohio to dow South, to Tucson. $29.99 per month, no contract.

Glad to see some positive reports on Consumer Cellular.
We have been using their cell plan for a couple of years now.
We are very light cell phone users and do not text at all.

I was looking at their text / data plan
The max plan is
Text Data @
15,000 / 2GB $30.00

https://www.consumercellular.com/Info/Services

We both use the laptops a lot for internet.
Internet reading, games, DW's social media.
No movie or music streams.

Does that data plan look like a reasonable plan for 2 people
while on the road?

We are both retired but my wife tutors elem. age kids in reading and math and we have 2 phones. She uses hers a lot more than I do for voice and text. Parents text her a lot. I hardly ever use text but do use the data to keep informed while out and about. Only have the 50MB plan but when we go camping I may up it if needed. Where we often go now has a wifi hot spot so now I don't have to increase the data while away from home. Our's runs about $62 a month for 2 phones @ 1200 min. and 50MB data. One phone would be about half that.

You can also use an AT&T smartphone instead of the ones CC sells. You just need to know how to configure it for data which is not difficult. Generally CC phones are about 6-12 months older than current new releases. Not a big deal unless you want the latest and greatest features. Most of us retirees don't bother with all the bells and whistles anyway.

We used to have AT&T and then switched to Verizon. Now we use Kitty Wireless which is a reseller of Page Plus, which is a reseller of Verizon. Same coverage, much lower cost.
With AT&T I couldn't get service at my desk at work, had to go stand by a window, with Verizon I get service at my desk, in the basement and even in the elevator shafts.

X2!!

Gave up paying Verizon prices, but still use their network. Now it's $30 a month for 1200 minutes, 3000 texts, and 500MB of data. More than enough! Kitty Wireless is the distributor that we use for Page Plus - great service, and, as pointed out by Davdeb, no contracts.

Only "restriction" is that Page Plus doesn't work on 4G phones. Ours is a 5 year old Droid X 3G phone, and it works perfectly.

Thanks for the info.

One thing I noticed with our Consumer Cellular plans is
we can change back and forth between plans as needed without
and added charges. NO contracts.

Ref. latest and greatest phone,
The ones we use now only are good for talking.
Surprisingly they have push buttons with numbers
and not a rotery dial. They won't even take a picture.

Now the two laptops being on all the time is something different.

I guess I'll have to learn more.

Page Plus is the same and since Kitty Wireless is a reseller they are also the same.

This may be acceptable to you but it may not be to many others. 500MB is practically no data at all and 3G phones are basically obsolete. If you are primarily looking for a voice phone with text messages this may be sufficient but for any significant smart phone usage it is woefully inadequate.

No, but that's OK as I don't agree with AARP on some of the things they support either. Unfortunately my wife wrote out a check to them again this year.

The average smart phone user uses less than 1gb per month. Yes, you may use more, but when I want to check emails, find info on Google, or stream videos, that last thing I want to do is look at all this on a phone. I have a Htc incredible 2 that I got on eBay. It is very fast and has a good processor.

I had a 4g LTE phone that was slick, and had unlimited data. $150 per month. I took the $120 I have left over, got 20gb of data 4g on millenicom, and dish TV top 120 pay as you go.
I now can use my phone for anything, and have fast internet for all my tablets and laptop.

So, to each his own I guess.

I know of quite a few that use over 50gb a month. Thom and I use what would be the "max" at 5gb on just the phones and that is not even trying thou we still have unlimited with Verizon. Right now thou most of our data usage for the laptops is thru the cable company where we are parked at so most of it is not thru the cells data plan.

Everyone is different in their usage.

Thom's mom and dad only use their cell for phone calls and every now and then a text or picture. We did not get them a cell that would go online very easily .... they are not that tech savvy so we just made the cell as easy as possible. What little they do online on their laptop they use the campgrounds wifi.

Everyone is different in their usage.
