Connecting 12V Winegard Carryout
I just recently purchased a Winegard Carryout satellite dome to use with my 2004 Itasca diesel pusher and one of the campsites we use in the summer will require the dome to be placed about 40-50 feet in front of the coach to clear all trees. Could I run into trouble by opening the front electrical panel just above the generator and connecting a wire with the cigarette lighter plug on the other end into any of the constant 12V connectors there. I could then replace the electrical panel cover and let the lighter plug lay on top of the generator (and use a plug with a cover to keep clean while traveling).
The easy way would be to run the cord from the dome through the front window of the coach directly into the coach cigarette lighter but then I've have to leave the window unlocked, which I wouldn't want to do.
From the rear of the coach will be no problem since the batterys are back there and easy to reach.

To solve this issue I bought a converter (or is it inverter?) to avoid using the cigarette plug. Plug the converter into regulare electric outlet and plug the cigaretter lighter into it (I have electrical plugs in my cargo bay). Just make sure and check your satellite manual, the converter has to be a certain size. Got mine at radio shack....around $50.

I installed a 12 volt cigarette lighter plug on the exertior of my 5er with a rubber plug when not in use. just find a somewhat sheltered spot where you can tap a 12 volt source.

Here are the specifications:
• Specifications for max amperage: 5.0 A
• Specifications for unit operating voltage: 10.5–13.8 V
• Specifications for supply voltage: 12–13.8 V
So you need a "converter" that is rated for 5 amps and supply voltage of 12-13.8v.
I purchased the one at Radio Shack. Just look at the specifications on the converter box to see what the outputs are. I think the one I opted for was $89 and was a little over the 5 amp capacity.

I think you mean "socket", but yes that should be fine. i also would use an in line fuse with the socket.

I see no problems.. Personally in our case I"d tap the 12 volt starter power lead to the generator (If I were to do this i would not need to leave the covers off) and I'll make it easy for you.
You can buy a "Clip on 12 volt outlet" like the one pictured on the link below at many stores... Including the link below (Which by the way was found via a Google Search, the search terms are the words in quotes at the start of this paragraph)
12 volt battery clip on accessory socket power outlet 12V cigarette lighter | eBay

I ordered a 12V Sunforce converter rated at 5.8 amps from Wal Mart internet source and it wouldn't even start my 4.0 amp bicycle air pump so I sent it back. I called Sunforce to see if they had any explanation why their 5.8A unit wouldn't operate a 4.0 amp bicycle pump and all I got was "It takes more than the 4.0 amp to start the pump" which I suppose it could but surely not almost 50% more. I then checked with our local Radio Shack, which I knew from past experience would be an act in futility, and they had no idea what I was talking about.
Now I've found that Amazon has a RoadPro 12V 6.0A converter for $18 (shipped and sold by Smarthome) and a battery clip with 2' 14 gauge wire with the cigarette adaptor on the other end for $5.02 (shipped and sold by Amazon). Both of these sound like what I really need but I'm sure it was a lot easier to send the converter back to Wal Mart than it will be at Amazon if it doesn't work out also.
I'll have to take a look-see if I can locate the starter power source for my generator. This may take some doing since everything is covered.
Thanks for all the help.

I looked at my Shady-Ol-Rack receipt and the one I purchased for $89 is 19A. Lot of amps, but then I can use it for other things if I need to.
