I have a Dell laptop and the hinge on the right side broke. I took it to a local repair shop and he claims it too hard for him to fix. He says that Dell will fix it for $200 plus parts and labor. Anybody had this happen to them?

Tom,
I have repaired many of the Dell laptops. Some with hinge problems. They are not really that hard to repair/replace depending on the model. But they do require quite a disassembly process as not to do more damage. Not a job for someone that is not skilled in doing such a repair.
You did not list the model number of your Dell laptop.

One of my hinges (left one) is looseie goosie on my new Dell XPS M140 that I bought at the end of February. It's probably covered under the warranty but I don't want to send it in nor do I want their geeks to have access to my data that's stored on it.

Ron,
It is at a repair shop. The laptop is a Dell Lattitude. The guy said the screen would have to come apart and it was more than he wanted to do. Dianne is picking it up today for me.
I have since called another computer repair and they say this is not a hard fix. So tomorrow it going to them.

Tom,
That sounds like the best thing to do. Dell Latitudes are not hard at all to repair the hinges on and the displays come out easily, IF you know what you are doing.
Richard,
You can remove your hard drive before you sent it to Dell to repair the hinge then your info will be secure. They do not need the hard drive in it for them to repair. Just make sure you have no static in you body before touching the hard drive. Another thing is to contact Dell to see if there is an authorized repair center near you that can do warranty repairs.

Somewhat related.... Can hinges on Dell laptops be tightened? Mine seems to be looser than it was a few months ago and if the screen is leaned too far back it drop down to the rear. It's a Latitude probably 4-5 years old.

Ken,
That is different, usually the Latitude hinges are too tight causing cracks in the plastic from forcing it display to open.
I have never had to tighten one, but I suppose one could, but it would require disassembly and removal of the hinge. Then use a center punch on the outside of the hinge housing to tighten on the pivot pin.
I don't have any spare hinges or I would try it, but I don't see why one could not tighten.
The hinge looks much like a small cabinet door hinge.
