Haven't had a dial-up account for 10 years. I did recently use a very slow shared wifi at a KOA - Sorta took me back.

I've seen numbers from 15% of households to 35%. There is still a large number of places where you can't get cable or DSL and some of these are near metropolitan areas. There are also many places you can't get cell/3g/4g either.

I only know one family with dial up and they rarely use their computer.

We had dial up for years. It was the only service available where we live. No cable, no DSL. A number years ago we went with WildBlue Satellite when it became available. Very weather dependent at this end as well as at the down link end in Texas. Finally two years ago a service came in that is like a wi-fi service. They put an antenna up on the grain elevator about 4 miles away and can service about 180 homes from it. Works great.
An interesting point of information. The slowest service you can have is dial-up. The fastest is FTTH. Fiber to the house. Everything else, T-1, DSL, 3G,4G falls in the middle. To download a full lenght movie, like from NetFlicks, would take 17 days with dial-up. The same movie with FTTH would take .3 seconds.

Have a friend ---way out in the sticks---has dial up---no need to send him a picture of anything, he just does not even try.

Haven't used it in years. Would sure like to get that dial up and connected tone as a ringer on my cell phone though.

For free ringtones;
Go to Download free ringtones for your mobile phone | Zedge and search on "modem".
They have several.

I worked on 8 party to 4 party conversions in a rural area many years ago. What fun! Or maybe what fun? Then our customers discovered answering machines and phones from Kmart (don't think we had Walmarts around yet) that answered everyone's calls on the line. Until we had better electronics we had to nicely tell them you can't use that stuff or get a private line, if one was available. Not the good old days.
About dial up. We haven't had it since the early or mid 90's. Getting a brand new 56K modem was a big deal. After getting FiOS we couldn't deal with it. Even when traveling if we get a slow CG WiFi, out come the Droid phones to tether to our laptops. These are the good old days right now
