I searched the fourms but can't find the answer to my question. So here goes> For digital over the air tv, is it broadcast on VHF or UHF? If both, which antenna is better to use, a VHF or UHF?

I'm pretty sure it is UHF.

It can be both. Depends on the station. Most are UHF. Go to www.antennaweb.org for a listing of stations in your area and if they are UHF or VHF. In general you will have better luck picking up distant VHF stations than UHF.

Most are UHF, but a few are in the high end of the VHF band and any old VHF/UHF antenna will work. There is no such thing as a digital or HD antenna.
There are a few low power analog stations till broadcasting.

Digital over the air frequencies are in both VHF and UHF but you'll find a lot more channels in UHF. VHF is only channels 2-13 whereas UHF is 14-69.

Thanks for the excellent help. The web page answered the question and supplied the compas setting for the DTV stations. In my aera most of the DTV sttions are on UHF. I wll use that antenna first. Thanks again.

Steve,
Don't give up the VHF. Most antennae are built to combine both VHF & UHF. There may be digital VHF. I read one time, about 6 months ago, that the transition to digital would cause the broadcasters to switch to a UHF frequency until such time as the regulations are well in place. It is a known fact that VHF frequencies are far stronger than uhf frequencies at the longer distances. They stated in the article that I read that the UHF frequencies would eventually transition down to the VHF frequencies as soon as the patterns for the various cities were analyzed.
Anyhow, that's my story, and I may not stick to it.

Most of the digital channels are UHF. The VHF channels are usually in the range of channels 7 - 13. Channels 2 - 6 are not as well suited for digital TV as analog television.

Some more links that may serve as information pieces:
The Digital TV Transition: What You Need to Know About DTV
TV Frequency Spectrum for Digital Vs. Analog | eHow.com
A search on FCC television frequency allocation will reveal a lot of details on the TV frequencies that have been allocated.
Remember that if you see Channel 2 on your television set that it is a "virtual channel." It could easily be from the UHF spectrum. (read the second article)
