I am writing to publicize the many problems I had when I responded to the Direct Sat TV advertisement that appears in recent Highways magazines. I think this company uses very deceptive, if not fraudulent, practices and recommend that you refuse to run their ads in the future.
The ad says the service "includes major network channels"; in fact, network channels have to be added to the service. This addition requires additional waiver paperwork, substantial delays, and additional monthly charges that they don't tell you about when you order the service.
The ad says "free installation"; in fact, the only thing free about the installation is mounting the dish and drilling one hole through one wall. Anything beyond that (such as running a cable through the attic) is called "complex" and requires additional charges. In my case, the installation used existing cables in the attic, but I was still charged more than $100.
The ad says "S&H fees may apply"; they tell you on the phone that you will be billed $60 for shipping for two receivers. However, when you get the bill, half of this "shipping" fee is for an extended warranty that they don't tell you about.
Finally, the channels that are actually provided are not the same as those listed on the DirecTV website or the channel card provided during installation. Channels are deleted and replaced with other unknown and generally useless channels.
The worst part of ordering DirecTV service is the deceptive and misleading answers that you get whenever you ask a question. I suggest that anyone ordering DirecTV service take their time and get everything they are told in writing prior to ordering the service.

I believe that ad is run by a DirecTV reseller/installer and not DirecTV. The quality of the sale and install is only as good as the installer you get. Most have never installed services in an RV. The local channels they refer to are the spot beamed channels at your home location, it is only when you travel outside your home area that you need a waiver for DNS. I also believe that the ad is somewhat deceptive in that it is inferred that they are oriented to RVs.

The waiver paperwork referenced is to receive National network feeds (usually from the East and/or West coast). The paperwork is required for either Dish or Direct. The Networks were rrequired to allow you to receive these feeds if you have a letigitmate registered RV or a CDL if you file the form.
Previous to the use of the form, the networks were not going to allow national feeds to be received. They wanted you to use your off air antenna when on the road.

Best Buy sales the HD receiver and so does Circuit City. I was told that when you activate they will send you the HD dish that helps you to get the locals and the new 150 HD channels. When I talked to Direct TV, they told me I had to buy the receiver from windgard as thats the dish I have on the roof. I'd have to buy the dish itself to get the HD channels. Like someone said, Don't like the answer,Hang up and call again. I know we have to sign the papers for national feeds but thats the easy part,Finding anyone who Even knows what they are talking about...Thats Hard!!!

Sounds to me like this was a house installation. I don't have an attic in my coach as is mentioned in this post.
In fact, if you call any of these outfits that advertise in the mags or Best Buy, they will tell you that they do not do RV's. Networks still require a waiver in your sticks and bricks to ensure you don't live in an area with over the air networks.
