A SWM system is needed if your DVR/receiver is an HR25 or an HR34 or HR44 Genie. Those are "SWM only" receivers. All other DirecTV receivers I believe will work with either SWM or the older multi-switch systems.

My Winward SWM3 Direct TV roof mounted system does require the SWM3 box. Since my home also has the same Direct TV interface I take the receiver, mini receiver, both remotes and both power supplies to the RV. Wingard's system also was supplied with the same SWM interfaces so I leave those at home. At the RV I plug in both receiver power supplies, satellite cable and HDMI cable for both receivers. It all works great!

Do you mean SWM capable receiver? Or an SWM-8 switch "box"? What antenna does it come with? If it's a dome, and you want to use an SWM-only receiver, then you need an SWM-8 switch installed. If it's an automatic dish (Winegard or RFMogul), those come with an SWM LNB and you'll need an SWM-capable receiver.
