Direct TV and RV

I just switched to direct tv from dish. I used a tailgater, and was simple to setup. I have c51-100 receivers(SWM only). I have looked everywhere, and can't find what my options are for portable satellites. Plus what I have found are only SD capable. We would like to use for 2 tv's. Have others run into, and what options are there. I prefer not to have to go through extensive setup. Thanks for any help, or guidance.

Any dome type satellite will only receive SD with Direct Tv. The Traveler by Winegard is the only open face satellite system that can receive digital from Direct. This is their website. RV Antenna - Winegard Roof Mounted RV Satellite Antennas. These are very expensive, but they are fully automatic. They work with the newest satellite boxes. You can verify your box on their web site. I have never heard of the box type you mentioned in your post. Hope this helps.

Hawkeye is right - the Tailgater will not receive HD on Direct - no dome will do that, not even one that is permanently installed on the roof. The Trav'ler is an excellent system, but like Hawkeye says, it is expensive - around $2000 installed.

An lower cost alternative to the Trav'ler for HD is a SWM-3 dish on a tripod (under $100 for the dish and another $100 or so for a decent tripod). It takes some practice to be able to aim the dish manually, but it can be done.

Before you invest money in any DirecTV SD equipment be aware that DirecTV will eventually stop SD broadcasts. You can read more here: Solid Signal Blog - RUMOR: DIRECTV dropping all SD programming in 2016? --NOT TRUE--

I'm curious why you dropped Dish, they seem more RV friendly than DirecTV.

I had DirecTV for my home for many years and finally dropped them when their costs became noncompetitive.

You may want to see if you can backout of your DirecTV account. Dish and DirecTV are significatly different technologies now and what works well for Dish does not work for DirecTV.

The RF Mogul Eagle unit will also receive Direct HD. Don't believe the incorrect advertising that some companies put out. RF Mogul also has a controller that works with the MotoSat HD dishes which is what I have. The controller has it's own GPS so it has a very fast lockon time, even after moving several hundred miles.

We have DirecTV at home and I am considering getting this Satellite System to take on the road with us. All of the automatic dome antennas for use with DirecTV only receive standard definition (SD) TV (one satellite). Rumor has it that DirecTV will discontinue SD broadcasting in the near future. Besides I have become addicted to HD broadcasting. The system referenced does receive 3 satellites. From my research it doesn't look like it would be hard to setup and point the dish using an inexpensive inline satellite finder.

I would like to know if any of you have done this and have any words of wisdom for me. At home I use an HR44-200 receiver for DirecTV that I will be taking along with us.

The C51 is a client for a Genie. It will not do anything without a Genie. All Genies are SWM only. The 50 series receivers have the power inserter built in and I'm guessing will only work with the SWM LNB's. The 40 series use a separate power inserter and as such can be used with a SWM LNB (21volts) or SWM8(16) multiswitch using a 29 volt power inserter. In order to use the SWM only receiver with a dome, you must run the signal through a SWM8 switch.

I have installed many (over 100) various DTV systems, but have no first hand experience with the 50 series receivers, so some of my assumptions concerning those units may be incorrect.

I have a roof mount King Dome, a Winegard Entertainment Select model vs-0503/VS-5312 and 2 flat screen TV's, just (like the other member) got Direct TV and have absolutely no clue what to do to make it all work and for the most part who to call to make it work.

Newbie in more ways than one.

Just bought new Winnebago Itasca Sunstar 29VE.

The "entertainment center' has coaxial cable inputs, from the antennae and outside inlet which then go to a splitter, again coaxial, to go to the other TVs.

My problem is my Direct TV box (H24-100) does not have a coax out. It only has HDMI and component.

Ideally, I would like a HDMI to coax cable converter . I have looked all over and can't find a thing.

I have a work around, but it involves drilling and cables and all that.

Suggestions?

With DirectV SWM system, the inputs to and outputs from the HR-44/54 are on the same RG-6 coax. With the LNB9, there are 9 separate channels on the coax; five are the input channels from the LNB to the receiver and three are outputs from the receiver to the clients or RVU equipped TVs. The ninth channel is for internet and control. Using a green splitter anywhere in the SWM coax allows you to tap into the signal for a client. So with the SWM system, you need a splitter near the receiver and a client near the TV and a HDMI cable from the client to the TV. Of course, if you have a RVU capable TV, just run the RG-6 coax directly to the TV from the splitter. The other option is to go wireless with a video bridge and wireless clients. The bridge connects to the splitter and the wireless client connects to the TV. The effective range is about 100 ft and the bridge can output three different signals to three different HDTVs, simultaneously. Generally DirectV will supply all of the equipment you need during an upgrade cycle or at least they did for me.

Solid Signal.com mas many tutorials and videos on their website showing the various options. They also sell all the equipment needed if DirectV won't supply it for free.

I use this gizmo to send the DVR signal to my rear TV.

It is an SD connection.

The front TV is HDMI connected.

I use a modulator with my H-24 box to convert to coax. Same function as deandec stated. Mine uses 110 V and takes RCA cables from the H-24 to the modulator. Coax is hooked into modulator to TV. Standard def only. I bought it at Radio Shack but I'm sure you can find one on the internet.

I solved my problem. There was an unknown HDMI to TV port inside the cabinet adjacent to the TV. All I needed was a coax splitter and everything works the way I want it to.
