Direct TV in the RV and home

We're having a Winegard traveler installed on our new RV. The plan is to get direct tv for the house and take 2 of the receivers with us when we go on the road. Will the receivers at the house still work? Can I or do I have to change the location of the RV boxes? I asked the direct tv guy at Costco and I got a blank stare.

I've been doing it for many years now. It's also allowed by their TOS. Whether the others will still work depends on what your setup is. Ours are all the old SD with antenna wire run to each receiver though. If you go with the non wired satellite units then the units left at home probably won't work.
Have never notified Direct that we were moving them.

Don't tell Directv anything, just move the receivers from your home to your coach and if you leave a receiver at home, it too will work.

We spend a significant amount of time in our coach - while our adult son stays home. We've got a Genie setup in the "sticks and bricks" and purchased an additional HD-DVR for the coach (cost: $200 plus $7 per month to add it to our account). We get DirecTV while on the road ... kid gets to watch DirecTV at home when we're gone. We consider the $7 monthly fee negligible - and worth the spend to not have to wrestle with constantly shuffle hardware between the house and the coach.

As far as telling DirecTV anything ... we don't. We simply ensure that we reset the HD DVR box each time we move.

We use Dish network and have 2 receivers at home and 1 in the motorhome. Dish is fine with it and even changes the home location so that we can get local stations while on the road in different locations.

The guy at Costco could not give you the answer you wanted. The truth is what you want to do violates the Terms of Service agreement you sign when you get DirecTV service. In DirecTV terminology that is "stacking" because you have receivers simultaneously operating at more than one location at a time. But, since you only do this when you travel and it is the same family members watching no one is really going to get their panties in a twist when you do it. As others have mentioned, just don't make an issue of it and no one will know.

Just so you know, the receivers have no idea where they are located, so having a receiver in your coach when you are away and leaving an operating set at home where someone else can watch it is indistinguishable to DirecTV.

But, you are going to run into more issues than you realize if you are not "up to speed" on DirecTV technology. If you are getting a new installation at home, DirecTV is going to want to install a Genie server for your primary TV and "slave" units for any subsequent TV locations in your house. You want to have fully functioning capability on two levels, your home and your RV. That means that a Genie/slave setup will not work for you. With a Genie all the tuners are in the server and cannot be used in two separate locations. And the "slaves" cannot be used independent of the Genie server. So, you need to think about receivers or DVRs to be added to your home setup for use in the RV.

But wait, there's more. Having a Genie introduces you to their SWM technology. You need to make sure that your Trav'ler is SWM too. It probably is, but you need to make sure.

As you can see this can get a bit complicated. What do your really want to accomplish in your S&B location? How many TVs do you have there? Is it really important to have a active system at home? If you can flesh out these questions we can be in a position to give you better answers on what options you may want to explore.

Just some food for thought.

I have a Genie, one slave unit and a HR44 receiver in my house. When we travel I remove the HR44 and install it in the motorhome. No issues from DirecTV, as I called and got the HR 44 from them and told them what I was planning. I didn’t have to purchase the HR44 I just pay the $7.00 per month. You will have to change the HR44 setup when moving from the house to the motorhome and back again when back in the house. Also anything you tape on the HR 44 while in the house can be watched in the motorhome, however what you tape on the Genie will not go with the HR44.

I would suspect that you mean HR24, not HR44. The HR44 is a Genie server and they only allow one Genie per account. But, the rest is a good way to go. You must have have a conventional setup in your RV. If you had SWM in both you would not need to change any settings when you moved from your house to your RV. Just be aware that the OP wanted to have two receivers in the RV. If he has SWM in the RV it would probably be better to have an HR24 for recording at the main TV and an H25 for just a receiver in the bedroom.

How many TVs at home and in the RV?
The HR44- is a wireless Genie capable of handling up to 5 remote slaves wirelessly.
We take three pieces with us when we leave home. The Genie, one mini for the bedroom TV and the video bridge which is the wirelessly transmitter for the clients. Once your RV is wired it only takes a few minutes to connect everything.

Your correct I should have state HR24 not HR 44. I had my system configured by the dealer to use the HR 44. After returning home I discoverd it would only receive one satellite due to my dish (RTT-40B) and the HR44 not being compatable per Winegard even with the SWM8 and other accessories. I got the HR24, removed all the dealer installed items and all is great.

P.O.ed @ Dish

Have used Dish in Sticks & B and RV for 20 years. Have a 722K receiver in both. Each unit runs 2 TVs and records 2 shows at a time.

Finally thinking of going Direct but don't know if it's any better.

My complaint is that when recording a program, receivers cuts off the last 3 min of shows. I set start early to 0 min. and end late at 0 min.

If I don't set as above I can't record a program on"TV2" then recorded on a diff. channel immediately after on "TV2". So if guide says program starts at 8:00 and ends at 9:00 I end up with 3 minutes of show ENDING at 8:00 and loose 3 min. of recorded show.

Dish tec. has no advice.

Does anyone with Direct have similar problems? Peter

That's a good example of why having 5 tuners in a DirecTV Genie is important. We rarely, if ever, have so many things being recorded that this sort of conflict exists. We I've never encountered loss of the beginning or ending of shows because of this problem.
