Direct TV Question....service in RV and two homes

We've been with Direct TV since 2004. Our service is based at our former 'permanent' home which is now a vacation/lake home. Our permanent address is in yet another home in Richmond, VA. As far as Direct knows, we use their equipment in the lake home and in our motorhome (we use Xfinity in our current house in Richmond which we hate and do not want to use it in the new house).

We are selling our current home in Richmond and buying another home a few miles away. It will be our new permanent home. We want to have Direct install a dish on the new house. Our plan would be to use the HR54 we currently use in the coach in our new home (move it to the coach when we travel) and have Direct install two other mini receivers in the new house. So, we would have their stuff in our lake house, the permanent house and two receivers in the coach.

Based on what I have been reading lately on these forums, Direct seems to be less flexible now that they are owned by AT&T. Before I call them and open this can or worms, was curious if anyone here might have some insight into this issue.

Just an opinion but all the research I did led me to believe that Dish Network works a lot better for us. We have the Hopper system at home and two 211s with additional memory in the MH. We can turn the portables on and off when we want them. Using the internet I can get local channels where ever we are. I also like the Dish programming a lot better.

If you notice, Direct always advertised as better than cable, never better than Dish.

According to what I've read online you ought to be entitled to having service at both a primary residence and at a vacation place, but you have to say that there is no way that service at both locations could be used at the same time, such as a child left at home when you were at the lake. If DTV balks at this, ask for the Customer Retention Department and tell them you're going to switch to DISH if they don't cooperate.

An alternative approach is tell DTV that you are moving from the lake house to the new residence and you want them to install your HR54 there along with the mini's. You can also ask that they also install the receivers that you normally keep at the lake house, but they may balk at that unless those are DVRs. (You can have a Genie and other DVRs on the account, but a Genie and other regular receivers is less sensible).

After everything is installed at the new house I would take the desired receivers back to the lake house. If you had to give them up in order to get the Genie installed, then buy two new ones. Non-DVR receivers are pretty cheap and you can buy them online. All you need to do is tell DTV that you are adding them to the account; they won't balk about them as add-on's even though they might ask you why aren't you using a mini-Genie?

Ford verses Chevy discussion started.

The original poster is a DirecTV customer already. The question he asked was "could he add a third receiver in a third location to his account".

THAT is an original question on here as far as I can tell. Have had DirecTV in my S&B and coach for two years with NO problems and pretty good service - provided you know specifically what you are asking when you call.

I can see no reason that they would refuse as long as you are firm is asking for what you want. Tell them you have service in your vacation home and motorhome and now you want service to your full time home.

I think a better approach would be to use a third party seller of receivers and have them install it for you. They know who to call on the DirecTV end and will have motivation to get you hooked up. Otherwise they will not make a sale.

One complicating factor is switching your local channels to your present location. Is your vacation home and main home in the same service area? If so, you should be good to go. If all three are in a different local channel spot beam, you MIGHT run into issues if you switch too often. Have heard folks on here say they have been warned about switching too often. Me, I switch at least twice a week (average) for 7 or 8 months out of the year without any indication that it is a problem so take that for what it's worth.

I think I would add Maintenance to your account, I believe it is $7.95/mo. This gives you the right to upgrade and also replacement if there is a failure. It also entitles you to antenna tuning. I would then tell them you are moving and you want a dish installed at the new residence for your existing receivers. Take your receivers to the new residence and make an appointment for installation of the dish at the new residence. Once this is done you should be able to move the receivers between new residence, vacation home and motorhome as you please.

You can then cancel maintenance if you want. I have found it does give you an easier path to get what you want.

It sounds like you move the HR54 from your lake house to your RV now. So, do you intend to move your HR54 between the lake house, your RV and your new "permanent" home?

If so, DirecTV really should not have an issue with what you want to do. If you stay with with only one HR54 on your account and you have minis in each of the other locations, this is a clear indication that you are not "stacking". (Having more than one active account on a single bill. Which violates DirecTV's terms of service.) The minis are totally useless without the HR54 server.

You should be able to get a free installation at your new home with a "mover's special". Except you are just moving service from your vacation home to a new permanent residence. DirecTV has allowed for a vacation location in addition to a permanent home for a long time. And this was in the stand-alone receiver days when you could actually have two receivers running simultaneously. With a Genie server setup, the minis are just dead boxes until the Genie shows up. That sort of cements it that you only have one location active at a time.

I just cannot see DirecTV getting their panties in a bunch over this. It will be interesting to see what you find out.

My suggestion is get an RV account. like any DirecTV account I think they provide up to 4 recelivers. but with an RV account you qualify for Distant Network Service..

You will have to obtain antennas for the houses (or simply use the RV's antenna if you are parked there) for the houses but they will be rooms 2 and 3 or 3 and 4

I had the gene system installed in the house and Direct left the old box with me to use in the rv and when I use the rv I call they turn on the box . No charge for the box when not in use.

Yes Ron I did tell them I was using it in the rv. They are the ones how told me what I could do if I up graded to the gene system at no extra cost. but it cost me 7.50 more a month when I turn the one in the rv on and then the cost goes away when not camping.

We were DirecTV customers for decades and used a house receiver in the rig when we were on the road. They never questioned where my receiver was - either didn't care or didn't know. We had a Winegard G2 on the roof that worked perfectly. The only issue is you can't get HD with the portable units and you loose your local channels when you venture outside the 300 mile spot beam.

Our new rig has a full-sized DirecTV HD dish on the roof that I will have converted to Dishnet... They will move your "locals" and incorporate them into your program guide any time you care to update your location.

Depends on what you have and what you want. I have a crank up Winegard on the RV and receivers at my "homes." Many will not accept this since we only have SD service at all locations and DirecTV no longer sells or leases SD receivers. Local channels at my home and nothing anywhere else since they are carried on spot beams.

I can crank up the dish and get a solid signal within 30 to 45 seconds...once I figure out where north is! It all depends on what you want. You really don't need to tell DirecTV that you are using it in your RV or frankly, anywhere else, as long as your receivers and antennas are compatible. Local channels are only there within 100 miles of your service address, but you can get local channels on the regular terrestrial antenna anyway.

I have been a customer of DirecTV since 1994 or so.

Why are you changing, that dish conversion is pretty expensive?

I like Dish better for the motorhome - you can call them every time you relocate and give them your zip code. They will change your location and provide locals right over your dish and incorporate them into your programming guide (best for DVRing network shows). DirecTV does not have that... You lose "locals" about 300 miles outside your "residence" area.
