Why do you have to buy your own? Don't want a new or add-on contract? Something else?

Might try eBay. That's where I found the best deal on my new Dish 211k receiver.

It's true, you buy them. Direct TV is the distributer. (Thats my experience anyway)

Any DirecTV authorized dealer, including Best Buy, warehouse stores, independant dealers will sell you a DirecTV receiver. Be careful of purchasing a used receiver from an individual because it may not be theirs to sell and will not be able to be activated.
There isn't a large profit in new DirecTV receivers because all DirecTV receivers now a days go into the lease pool when activated unless you make special arrangements with DirecTV. BTW, there is no advantage, only disadvantages to do this.
Installation of that DirecTV receiver in the motorhome is a whole different subject. Most authorized DirecTV dealers are focused on home installation and can not or will not touch a motorhome due to liability. There are a handful of independant authorized DirecTV dealers that not only install the right receiver for your needs but also teach you the things you need to know about two seperate locations with your receivers. You see, it is against DirecTV policy to have receivers in a motorhome and stick home on the same SKP account. Many RVers do have this but if you tell DirecTV that you are doing this, they will want to make you open a new account for the RV.
I have found the key to a dependable direcTV satellite system is have a good professional installation with someone not only experienced with mobile satellite systems and motorhome wiring but also can provide all the correct equipment neccesary.

Hi Gary,
This is the policy as I have understood as well but maybe you can help me understand something. How does DTV reconcile this policy with their process for approving DNS service once a copy of the RV registration is sent to them? Isn't that inconsistent?

FWIW, Best Buy, at least in VA stop selling them. Having put DirecTV on a previous boat, I just opened account and had the local DirecTV installer show up at the house for the free receiver and installation. When he showed up, we walked across the street to the boat that was already, just needing the receiver. I instaleld it, turned it, he saw that it worked, and we were all done. He probably liked getting paid to do an install that didn't require an labor or parts :-)

This is simply incorrect! DirecTV does not care if you use one or more receivers in your home and/or RV. What you cannot do is have a receiver in your home with local Network programming and another receiver in your RV with DNS service. Just as you are allowed to have multiple receivers in your home you can also have one in your RV but it must mirror the service used at home and the home and the RV must be owned by the same person (no fair handing out receivers to everyone in the neighborhood).
Gary's link only takes you to the Escapee forum home page so I am not sure what he is trying to reference.

FYI, regarding Best Buy. They no longer sell DirecTV equipment. You can still order DirecTV from them as a new customer. But, I was in the store yesterday and they said DirecTV pulled all the receivers out of all the Best Buy stores. Go figure.
I still saw them for sale at a Radio Shack store early this year. Don't know if their still offering them or not.

I'm with Bill Adams. DTV doesn't care about running a DTV reciever in your RV. In fact, when I signed up for their service, they provided a dish, tripod and 50' 0f RG6 cable to set the dish up. It was called the "RV" package. From time to time I have to call them to ping the reciever after it sets idle for more than a month but other than that, no problem.

I don't know what "policy" you refer to but when I got my MH in 2008 I called to have the 2 RCA receivers added to my residential account and made it quite clear where they were located. In fact, on my equipment list with Direct TV is says "RV front" and "RV rear". Because these were so old, it was quite a chore to activate them and required someone higher up the food chain than regular customer service. But all I was required to pay was $5 extra per receiver per month - just like any other receiver in the house. So, if there is a policy, it is not followed by their employees. I did not attempt to hide anything and they knew from the beginning these were in my RV. That is one of the main reasons I have DirectTV instead of Dish (which I have heard does require a separate account but have never verified with Dish network).

It is our experience that Bill Adams is correct. We have them in our house and in our rv. If problems arises it is always with rv. When we call we tell them the location of receivers and they resolve the issues.
