I have a roof mounted dish as well as portable one. I am traveling into nova scotia as well as part of Quebec. I have noticed a reduced signal strength at Saint John NS but when I got to Nova Scotia I could not get any signal with either. I expected reduced signal going north but don't under stand the loss going east. Does the small dishes roof mount or portable not work at all going north. Thanks in advance for any experience.

WE use Direct TV too. In Nova Scotia a couple of years ago was able to get signal in Cape Breton. The dish is an 18"round. Got to be precise aiming too.

North or that far east. DirecTV is only meant for the US market, and you will have signal issues the further you get outside the US. The beam(s) from the satellite are tuned (shaped) specifically for the US.

We spent most of this summer in Maritime Canada. We have a roof-mounted Winegard Trav'ler and were able to get excellent HD and SD signals at a campground in Halifax NS. On Prince Edward Island, which is a bit further north and east (at our location), we were still able to obtain excellent SD reception but some HD channels were not strong enough to be received. Because of the low angle and long path through the atmosphere, all the channels were more susceptible to "rain fade" than they normally are. I would expect that attempting to use a rooftop dome with a smaller dish would not provide such good results.
