I just upgraded from the record 2 channels to the Genie system. They left 2 of the old style receivers I called and asked if I could use one of them in my Motor Home at our property that is 50 miles south of here. They said yes but that there was a monthly fee for the receiver I think $6.00. I use the Wineguard portable dish that I bought on sale for $599.00. I take it out of the MH set it on the picnic table, plug it in wait and within a couple of minutes watch TV. Fifty miles takes me out of my local viewing range and into another local but I still pick up my local channels. I believe but not sure that there is a way to go into the menu and change the zip code to pick up the local channel where you are at. I’m providing this just for information as to how mine works.
Good luck

You are correct except the locals won't work at home anymore either. You end up getting either east or west coast network channels on all your receivers.

The zip code setting in your receiver has no effect on what it receives ; it is only to provide pointing information. Once you leave the spot-beam that has your local channels you won't be able to receive them.

Not quite true. You need to register for DNS service to get the national broadcasts feeds. DNS costs about $15/mo if I recall correctly. As a full timer without any home it is a great service. It is against FCC regulations to have DNS in a home site except under some very specific conditions.

Before we went full time we would call DirecTV and provide a "SERVICE ADDRESS" to obtain local channels. That can be different than the BILLING ADDRESS. Shortly after we went full time that got to be a hassle so we went DNS. The advantage is that we can set our recordings to the East Coast feeds. Makes that easy and our recording times remain correct regardless of time zone we are in.

BTW...when you go DNS you get either the East coast feeds if your BILLING ADDRESS is in the eastern or central time zones and West coast feeds if in the Mountain or Pacific time zones. Some channels like PBS only have one feed.

You are correct.

I find it strange that that "DNS link" says nothing about "DNS for RVs".
There is a DirecTV/FCC provision/rule whereby DNS programming, (either E or W), can be purchased for any RV with a "permanently mounted" satellite dish attached.
See: https://support.directv.com/app/answ...ns-in-my-rv%3F

My billing address is in Wisconsin and I've had DirecTV DNS, (in my RV only), since 2005...(I get both E & W feeds, anywhere in the U.S.)
I currently pay another $20 a mo., (in addition to the price of a regular DirecTV program subscription).
To qualify for DirecTV DNS, I had to send DirecTV a copy of my RV registration, along with a signed affidavit stating that my RV had a permanently mounted dish antenna.

In 2010 DirecTV gave me the choice of:
1.) being "grandfathered into" both E & W DNS network feeds, (for an additional $5 mo.), $20 total.
OR
2.) East DNS network feeds ONLY (at the former price of $15 mo. for both).

Both E & W network stations are no longer available to new subscribers.
Currently, new DirecTV DNS RV customers can only get either E OR W, (depending upon their billing address).
If your billing address is in the Eastern, (or Central), time zone you cannot get west coast network stations, (you will only get the east network stations, no matter where you camp in the country.... (unless you change your billing address to one in the Mountain or Pacific time zones).
You have no choice in the matter.

DirecTV's, (and the FCC's), information, rules and regulations are confusing, (and constantly changing).
No wonder they are often misunderstood, (even by DirecTV customer service personnel).

BTW, IMO, that's why "satellite TV" is the 3rd most common RV forum topic, (behind black tank odor and the kind of toilet paper to use).

When DVRs had only two tuners we used to find it useful to have both DNS feeds to avoid conflicts. Now that we have a Genie with 5 tuners we've yet to have a scheduling conflict with just the one DNS feed. Premium channels such as HBO and Showtime have both east and west coast feeds for some of their programming.
