DirecTV Genie Smart Search and East/West Coast Channel Package
I just got done with a chat with DirecTV Support and it seems I am the first to report an issue with the Genie DVR and what they call the "Network Package." For those not familiar, this package is popular for full-timers since they may seldom be in their local zip code and not able to get their local network channels.
While both the east and west coast network channels show up in my Guide, if I use the Smart Search feature, programs on any of these channels will not be included in the search results. It will only search cable channels and the network channel in my "local" zip code.
I can record the east/west network channels if I hit the record button in the Guide, and that is great, but I have long used and liked the Smart Search feature. The technician was going to put in a trouble ticket, so hopefully it will eventually be fixed.
If you are a DirecTV customer with Genie and the Network Package, you may want to see if you are similarly limited. If so, let DirecTV know so maybe the priority will get elevated.

We have a Genie HR44 and the East Coast network package. I just checked Smart Search against a current network program and the listings for "upcoming episodes" were all shown as being on the DNS channel (in this case 390). None of the search results were for the local CBS affiliate which also carries the same show.
I'm not sure why our results are different than yours. It seems as if there is some prioritization with respect to whether or not the search looks at the DNS channels or your local ones. Somehow your settings are different than ours.

FROM OP
Users on another forum mentioned that if after the search, instead of looking at the "Unsorted Episodes" that initially come up, go to the left menu and click "Upcoming Airings." All available airings then show up for me, including cable channels, local and E/W DNS.
Confusing, but maybe now I know how to do what I need to do.

That's the way our Genie (HR54) works. You have to go to "Upcoming Airings" to see all the channels.

I do not have the issue that you described. My home channels are displayed on the guide but I know not to try to use them because they do not work outside my area. I have the favorites button setup to show channel 390 and that puts all the 390 network channels on the guide screen.

I've been called 'slow' by the best of them, so no reason to add to this input !
But, are you guys saying that even though our DirecTV is tired to the West Coast feed, that I can use the Search feature and record upcoming events from the East Coast feed?
Of so, then I'd see that as a bonus, to a problem !
Really would like to have both East and West Coast Feeds. Was hoping the latest round of FCC ruling might also soften that rule for those that are truly mobile. Boats, RV's, OTR Truckers, etc.
Just trying to clarify what was posted.
When I go to say 'Menu', an use in our case the East Coast feed of say NBC not available, but he West Coast feed is available. You're saying if I go to search as described, I can record from the East Coast feed? Did I get this right?
TIA,
Smitty

You can't record channels you don't get. If you get west coast feed, you will not be able to record east coast and vice versa.
I think the OP is one of us lucky ones who is grandfathered into being able to still have both east AND west coast feeds. Those of us who had both feeds before a certain date were able to keep them if we wanted.

From the OP:
I have been a full-timing DirecTV customer for 10 years. With just a mail-forwarding address as "home" I am NEVER in my "home" service area. As suggested, I have always paid extra to have access to both E/W coast network feeds rather than "local" network channels.
I think it used to cost me $10, but currently it adds $20 to my bill. The line item is called "Network Package." Would be interesting if you could call up today and get that, or if indeed I am "special."

Direct customers can no longer get DNS from both coasts. Long-time customers like you and I are grandfathered in - we are indeed "special." After a certain date (I forget when it was), customers can only get network channels from one coast or the other based on service address - east coast feeds if it's in Eastern or Central Time Zones, west coast feeds if it's in Mountain or Pacific Time Zones.
If you ever give up or accidentally lose your east and west coast feeds, you will never be able to get them back. That's why when we changed our programming package a couple of years ago, I was very careful to make sure the agent on the phone who made the change knew what she was doing and didn't mess with my DNS.

IMO having feeds from both coasts is no longer a significant benefit. Nearly everything we watch has already been recorded on our Genie DVR. We get the eastern DNS feed which means that the network shows come on in the afternoon when we're in the western time zone but we don't watch them until the evening anyway. It would be far more annoying to get only the western feed when we travel in the eastern portions of the continent.

That is actually a good point and maybe I should reconsider paying for that access. Back when I had only two receivers, being able to juggle which feed to record helped me balance what I could record or watch live ( or listen to music). With 6 receivers, probably almost a non issue.
I listen to the music alot and in the past the old DVR would switch over to record something, interrupting it. I'll have to ponder this now.

Nowadays, we spend almost all our time in the east. A big benefit of having west coast feeds for us is on Sundays in the fall and early winter when most of the evening network shows are delayed by NFL games. Since the games are earlier in the Pacific Time Zone, the schedule gets caught up so all the evening shows are on time. I always record Sunday evening shows on the west coast feed so I don't have to guess how much of a time extension to add in the event of delays.
We always complain there's nothing good on TV, but it never fails that much of the time the things we do want to watch are all on at the same time. This can be a problem if you have a DVR that only records 2 shows at a time. Having feeds from both coasts allows you to time shift network programming by 3 hours so you can avoid conflicts. Even though our Genie can record 5 shows at a time, I still find it useful to be able to record some things at a later time from the west coast. We're happy to have east and west coast feeds even though it costs a little more.

For those like me that were Grandfathered in with both DNS coast. Back when I got DNS I also had a choice to drop local stations and they took off $3 a month for doing that.
That is still happening every month yet today. I also was Grandfathered in with the "Total Choice" package. But they have steadily raised the price on it. 2011 $57.49 and now in 2016 $77.62 including a sports channel that you can't drop for the same package. :(
Since they went to $7 lease for extra receivers I have dropped 2 receivers and added a HDMI switch from the Genie to feed those 3 TV's. Works good for me using extra RF remotes from those TV's.
