DirecTV Genie software glitch

For those who have DirecTV HR44 Genies (and probably other Genie models, also) there's a current software bug you should know about before it freaks you out like I was yesterday.

Last night I wanted to watch one of the shows we had recorded earlier in the week but it wasn't showing in the list of recordings. In fact none of our recent recordings were displayed, even though the recorder showed as having 60% of its storage being in use!

I decided that rebooting the receiver was a logical thing to do and while it was rebooting I did some Google searching. Sure enough this is a known software glitch in the current firmware version of the receiver. If you aren't aware, your DirecTV receivers receive periodic updates without your knowledge. Usually, they are fine; in this case the update has created an issue.

It turns out that rebooting the receiver restored my recordings (or at least the one I wanted to watch). And, from what I read, there are other things you can do, such as changing the "Sort" order, that will have similar effects. But what I read warns that the recordings might disappear again despite having done this!

So, once again we are at the mercy of DirecTV to fix a problem it has created. I guess this is yet another "improvement" brought about by the acquisition of DTV by AT&T!

The only current solution is to reboot. Resorting using 0 and such only helps for a short time. You can complain to the FCC and email the president of directv like I did. They called and offered a gini mini to use instead but I declined. We all have to suffer in the mean time. Issues has been around since summer at least I think.

I have had to do a reboot for this issue twice in the last 10 days.

Another issue is the receiver will record shows again after they were recorded and watched already. We were watching TV yesterday morning and it started to record the same shows again. I deleted this particular show off of my schedule to see if it would stop.

Yes this has been a problem, and I've just been re-booting the receiver when I turn it off. Something weird, My HR-44 doesn't show a software update but the list has been hanging in there for the last week or so without a re-boot. I wonder if they tweaked something? They really need to fix this problem. I'm still a stockholder and a fan but someone needs to step up.

I had trouble finding a show. I noticed that if you move the select button arrow to the left and highlight "All Recordings" and hit the "Select" button it now shows all your recordings.
I found this by accident.

I always do that but the receiver sometimes does not show all the recordings and requires a reset!

Another work around is to display the recording history, but I've had that fail as well. Another strange thing about this issue is that your clients and other DVR's will still display the complete playlist. It's only the main box that has the issue.

I strongly suspect that some series of actions with your remote is the trigger for the problem, but who knows? DTV obviously doesn't. The little bit of good news is that I have yet to hear of anyone who has actually lost any recordings.

Well I did decide to push the little red button after reading this post. Direct is always sending out reminders.

Us too on this. Its strange that it is only a few of our regular programs that this happens to. The Closer is one. Have to red button frequently to get them to appear.

Yes but we like the original. Mrs Belgique never saw that series and I, in my advancing years, can't remember what I had for breakfast so its like seeing it for the first time.

OMG! Salvation! Please come to my house and tell my wife that I didn't erase all of her recorded programs! We ran into this 'glitch' earlier this week and I can finally get out of the doghouse.

So, do I do a reboot? Or will that just make things worse and lose her stuff?

Rebooting should work. She won't lose any programs.

A hard reboot is needed sometimes for all electronics. Just unplug it. My neighbors new TV (6 months) would not work correct until I unplugged it and it is all good again.
