I have a KVH satellite dome on my 2005 Dutch Star with an old 99 vintage standard receiver. It is starting to fail and I need to replace it. Can I take a HD receiver from the house and install it in the motorhome? I'm not trying to get HD in the motorhome, but will the HD receiver pull in the standard DirecTV reception?

That depends upon the model of KVH dome. If it is a 99 vintage dome as well then the likely answer is no. If you have to plug something from the KVH antenna into the old receiver then it certainly will not work (HD receiver or standard).
You may be able to update the KVH if this is the case. Let us know what model you have and someone will likely be able to give you additional information.

The KVH dome came on my 2005 Dutch Star so I assume its a 2005 model. It is an automatic, but not an in motion dish. I think the model number is TracVision RS4. The only thing plugged into my old satellite receiver is a coax from the dish.
I just wondered if a HD receiver will work with the KVH - if it will seek and find the satellite and show a picture on the TV. I have a HDTV, but as long as it works I don't care if it picks up HD.

I believe that everyone understood the question but it could not be answered without knowing the model of KVH antenna you were using.
I suspect that it will work based upon you comment that you only have only a coax cable plugged into the receiver. Someone who is more familiar with the KVH line should be able to confirm that assumption.

The KVH R4SL has only a coax to the receiver and does not require the low speed data line that some earlier KVH models used. Actually it provides two coax and can handle two receivers, if his coach is wired for both. However, it will not receive most DirectTV HD signals, which are on a Ka band satellite now. It will, however, receive standard network (CBS/NBC/ABC/Fox) broadcasts which happen to be in HD.

Your KVH R4 or R4SL will receive Direct TV HD with a KVH add on board. It is a medium sized circuit board that installs in the coach.
I happen to have one if you decide you want to go that direction.

Not really. Only the couple of HD channels that are left of the 110 and 119 satellites can be received by ANY dome on the market. The 130+ channels of HD programming from DirecTV are broadcast on the KA band and your dome (all domes) have a KU band LNB. These are not compatible.
From the KVH website:
For RVers: KVH’s R-series satellite TV antennas are not compatible with DIRECTV’s Ka-band broadcasts, but the TracVision R4SL, R5SL, R6ST, and R6DX are all fully compatible with Ku-band broadcasts, including TurboHD™ from DISH Network® , so you can absolutely enjoy high-definition entertainment on the road!

YES, I take the HD receiver and put it into MH with Kingdom auto tracking antenna. Set HD receiver dish to 19" and guide to show all. No HD but seems to work better than old Directv receiver.

First, There are a couple of different Kingdome systems.. As I recall one of them has an intergrated Sat-Receiver and Dome controller.. However I'm very hazy on this.. If you have this kind.. You can not substitute another receiver. You must replace the one you have or get a "Stand alone" controller.
Page 2: Though an HD receiver MIGHT work for SD channels (Non-HD channels) the DOME is not able to receive DirecTV HD signals. Thus, it's a bad choice HD requries a dual band multi-satellite antenna.. The DOME is a Single band, One Satellite at a time, antenna. It is not HD compatible with DirecTV
It MIGHT be with DISH.. But the key word is MIGHT.

The domes are capable of working properly with the Dish Network HD programming. Some domes will need a hardware/software update to be able to locate the 129 or 61.5 satellites where the HD programming is located.
