DirecTV in an RV

With DirecTV, how do you get local channels in your RV? I was told they no longer offer DNS and it would cost $200 every time they changed my location!

Talk to local independent. satellite stores who advertise the DirecTV logs and see what they say. Don't think DirecTV wants to deal directly with RV's any more. Moving more than 100-200 miles or so seems to be the point that you lose your local stations. Do a search...this has been discussed a lot.

What you were told is incorrect. Call tech support, have them just change the Service Address, not the billing address, that is what we did last winter in AZ, worked fine. Someone on this forum said DTV was going to stop doing this, don't believe they can, and if you are close the and the TV is relative new, it has setting to get Over the air channels outside of the DTV box.

I have heard that there are several different “800” numbers for DTV customer support.

Thanks very much for this post, it convinced me to try to talk to DTV again. They had told me previously, the only thing I could do was a $200 move-my-service. I didn’t want to set up DTV again, it’s already installed in my motorhome!

So I called the 800-769-4635 number. Got a guy who asked my name and phone number to look up my account. Also asked for a my 4 digit secret code and a good phone number for AT&T communications. You need to get used to reciting this info. He asked me what I wanted and I told him I was a snowbird moving back north. He said he couldn’t help but gave me a new phone number to call: 877-407-4720. This was my first referral. In all I would have to call four different numbers (and wait for an available agent) and repeat my information each time.

Finally I got a guy who knew what I wanted and changed my service address. He had just gotten the new training last week. After I hung up I got an email confirming my “move” and announcing the $200 charge. GOOD GRIEF!

So the email had a number to call about my upcoming service appointment. The lady who answered took all my info again and said the guy must not have remembered to tell me I would get an incorrect email charging me $200, etc. She said she had new trining in the last hour and she could fix everything. She cancelled the order and then changed my service address. It took about an hour for the change to take effect.

If you get lucky u will wind up in tier 3 Issue Management. Suggest u go to the Directv web site. Select the"traveler package" Open a chat window and plead your case. I have gone this route and needed a new "declaration" form. I guess the one from 2012 was no good. I still do not have my channels but think I am close. CHECK your bill very close.

Best Number for DTV IS' 800-531-5000 = play the AI's game, then when you say Technical Support, hit the zero key, it will take you to a person in DTV, not ATT, the DTV folks know how to do this, and they have never asked me to pay to change my service address.

Wouldn't a Verizon or other unlimited hotspot and streaming Direct Now or Dish Sling be an easier and cheaper option? If you don't have a smart TV, get a Roku or Fire Stick, then use the TV antenna for locals.
Verizon unlimited prepaid $65/mon. Sling $25/month and $30 with DVR option.

Or you could go to DISH Network and get any channel package you want on a monthly Pay-As-You-Go payment plan. Then when you want to change your service address you simply go online to your "MY DISH" account and change it. Presto in 10 minutes you have new locals.

Why fight the DirecTV B S???

I have the $65 prepaid plan. It usually works great in the city. Out in the country you need a good connection AND a cell tower that’s not overloaded.

Before I make any phone calls I would like some direction as how to start. We have moved and our new stick house has cable tv included in our HOA fees. We have had DTV for over 10 years, 3 HD receivers, with one I take in the MH for use with my Wineguard Traveler dish. I do not wish to install DTV in my new home as it would be redundant given I already have paid for cable. I would like to keep the satellite DTV in the MH as we frequently travel where there is no cable or OTA available. Should I just call DTV and drop two of the receivers and leave things as they are or is there another path? Or another option?

I'd contact them and never mention an RV, just tell them your downsizing....probably will have to send 2 receivers back....they'll ask you for access card and receiver numbers that you want to deactivate....then wait a couple weeks, access your account and see what you're being charged for....I go to billing to straighten most problems cause they can transfer you to the correct folks to take care of your needs...should change your billing address, but tell them you DO NOT need a tech...you can set it up yourself....also, the chat function is the way to converse with them....during the week...

The above is one very good reason to stick with satellite TV. DirectTV or Dish are available everywhere you can see the sky. Wifi, Cellular and OTA are definitely not available everywhere, and are often unreliable.

Another reason I keep my satellite is that it gives me everything I want on one menu. I don't have to keep switching my TV from OTA to Internet, Hulu to DTVN to Netflix to Amazon, and wondering which shows I can see where. What a hassle! I don't know how people can enjoy TV that way.

Lastly, I can program my DVR to record shows when I can't watch them and play them back even if I have NO reception, something that is impossible to do with a combination of Wifi, Cellular and OTA reception.

That's precisely why we still have DirecTV. I like the convenience of having everything available with one connection and the DVR function is essential to us. We rarely watch anything in real time.

Streaming services such as Hulu with Live TV sound great but each of them has some quirks. For example, I wasn't aware until recently that Hulu with Live TV requires that you have a "fixed" internet connection via cable or fiber. Getting your internet via a cellular connection doesn't qualify. As far as I can tell each of the alternatives gives me some of what I want but not all of it. I don't want to rely on OTA because when we're traveling we aren't always near OTA stations.

So, for the time being, I'll keep DTV with my nationwide DNS channels.
