DIRECTV Letter

No I did not get a letter. But I have read this week of 2 users that did get a letter. I wish they would have posted the letter but apparently all it said was: With your present equipment you will be losing your local channels. Please call us to arrange for new equipment at no cost. Does not make sense. I have never been able to get locals on our D12 Receiver.??

I get NYC locals with my D11 receiver.

I think some locals are on a different satellite.

...no letter here either but think you are confusing "local channels" with East or West Coast feeds...though not sure why type of equipment or satellite used would have an impact...

I was just posting someone else's reference to a letter. I am not confusing anything. Some locals are on the bird that is SD and some are on the HD Bird. We get locals on our HD receivers but not on the D12. Because some channels are only in HD there are other services that we do not get on the D12.

I did get the letter today. It states that some of my equipment will no longer be able to get local channels. If I call them I will get the necessary equipment at no charge. This change was to be initiated on 2/18. my HD rcvrs seem to be working just fine. My D12 is not connected right now.. I sometimes use the D12 with a dome. If I ask for a H25 will that work with my dome. I understand that I would not be seeing HD on the TV. I think I read that the H25 would require some additional stuff? There is one dish on the garage that is non swm. Will that be affected? It is hooked to a H24 . I do not want to call them until I know what is happening. If the D12 will still work for everything else I may not do anything. I don't get Locals on that rcvr. But there a lot of other HD channels that I cannot get on my SD rcvr. If I had the H25 would I then get the others as well? Thanks

I got the email. It states that the local channels will no longer be available since they are only HD. I have an SD receiver and an SD DVR. Friend with Dome dish on RV called to have service address changed to Yuma, AZ and was told that the Yuma local stations are only HD and didn't work with the dome dish.

The H25 is a SWM-only receiver. Your current setup won't work with it unless you make a few mods. It's not all that difficult to convert it to SWM. You can find the basic directions here: https://docplayer.net/23804085-Guide...-antennas.html

Alternatively, you can use an H24 which will work in both SWM and Multiswitch modes.

After the upcoming DirecTV changes, most, if not all, local channels will be broadcast from the satellites at 99 and 103. The good news is that the simple dome dishes which primarily receive the 101 satellite will now receive HD programming, but the downside is that you won't be able to receive most (or any) local channels.

Not arguing nor trying to start one. We had Direct come out the other day to put equipment in the coach we just bought. He told me the new boxes that Direct put in the house the other day (Genie and mini Genie possibly the name of the house equipment) would not work in the coach with the dome antenna that is there, that I needed a new antenna on the ground beside the coach. This guy was not the sharpest knife in the drawer apparently.
I told him to just put the old style like we had in the house before the change. He said that would work until April but the satellite was going to change and it would not work after April.
You guys confuse me with all these model ??? and model XXX.
So my question is simple (for me anyway)
Is there any Direct TV equipment that will work in the MH with the Winegard dome after April? If so what and how and what do I ask Direct for?
Please don't start tossing model ??? and model XXX at me.

What I did was change receivers....had 2 old ones that received std def only, and now have 2 that will accept std def and high def.....there's only one receiver from Directv that will accept both, and as Directv only identifies their receivers by model number, they're H-24's,...I have a portable auto dish that is only capable of receiving std def, so with this new receiver, we'll see what we get.......and, I bought a tripod mounted Slimline dish with 3 pickups (lbn's) that will work for receiving both std. def and hd, ( due to the receiver) which will be used when I winter....the auto one I'll use for overnights and short term trips....The auto one only has 1 pickup....so, I think if you go with this receiver, you'll be ok......currently, I have both of my setups up and working, as a test...the input for this receiver is coax, and the output is hdmi cable...so your tv will need to have a hdmi port in it....the tripod one is connected to the inside tv, and is receiving HD, while the outside one is receiving Std Def, both viewing the same channel...

This whole dish thing is a constant source of confusion. The dish doesn't know what is being broadcast, only the receiver does. The wide range of dishes is due to the fact that DirecTV uses more than one satellite and the bigger, multi LNB dishes receive multiple satellites AT THE SAME TIME. They are bigger since they are shaped to allow this to happen since the directv satellites are close to each other...waaay up there.

You will need a receiver that is capable of receiving HD signals (gross generalization) but you may still have Standard definition out of it. In short, a nice non SWM, HD and SD receiver from Directv will work fine with the smaller dishes. (it is a Model 24!!!) If your system has auto pointing, then you will have to work with your antenna manufacturer to make sure that when you switch receivers your dish pointing system will get what it needs.

Sorry if this sounds complicated...but DirecTV just doesn't want to tell us exactly what they are going to do and what it means. Bottom line, as others have said, HD on national channels off an old, 18" or 20" dish with no antenna changes. Locals may never be received off that bird (101) but you will get the guide and the option for HD. Their contract installers do not understand any of this and just tell you you need what they were told to swap out and replace.

If you don't want to hear about model numbers I'm not sure how to answer your questions. What would you like us to tell you?
