Depends whether or not you are an existing sticks & bricks customer with an existing Directv account. First confirm whether or not it has an access card. If it does, copy down the serial number of the card. Next, you'll have to somehow get the serial number & model number of the receiver (back of receiver, very small & hard to read). Here's where it gets "Tricky", if it is a newer Sony receiver, copy down the "RID" number, it is in addition to the serial number of the receiver, copy both down. If it is an older receiver without a "RID" number you maybe sunk because Directv has implemented a new policy that will NOT activate an Non-RID'ed receiver. If it is an old receiver but you are a customer in "Good Standing" they will activate an older one for you (you just have to beg a little). A good website source for all things Satellite/Digital TV google up DBSTalk.
