I want to use a tripod setellite dish in my class a and am not sure what I'll need exactly.
I don't have a problem using a reciever from my house when I take a trip in my RV but will it work? I have the newer SWiM setup in my house and all hdtv recievers.
At this time I do not have I do not have HDTV in my coach and may not end up getting it since we will only be using the motorhome occasionally.
Can I just get a tripod dish setup and connect my reciever from the hous and be good or do I need something else? I don't really care much about local channels and would like to keep Directv out of it as much as possible.
PLease help with any and all suggestions and tips.
thanks

I can't answer your specific questions as we have Dish. We use our old receiver that we have had for about 15yrs that has just 1 LNB. You will need a signal meter that is available a Camping World and probably other places that you can put in the coax close to the tripod so you can see what you are doing while aiming the dish. If your reciever needs more than one LNB, that complicates setting up a tripod. Our reciever gets the local stations but not HDTV and problably other things we don't use.

On your DirecTV receiver's setup menu, do you have a configuration option for a round, 1 LNB dish? Does your receiver have a coax cable, S-VGA or composite video output that is compatable with your current TV set? If so, the receiver should work - of course, you won't have HDTV, but your current TV can't take advantage of it anyway, right?
I'm still using an ancient Hughes receiver in our RV....

Anyone familiar with the SWiM system and whether or not once a reciever has been setup for SWiM operation if it can be used in a regular LNB configuration without having to go through changes with DTV? Which LNB should I use for my rv?

I just went through this last Friday. I have the old crank up Winegard round dish on my motor home. I disconnected a Direct TV receiver from the house and plugged into that dish. In the house, the receiver was connected to a SWM dish which does not require power from the receiver, a separate power supply is required in the house for the SWM dish.
I don't remember exactly how I got to the set-up menu, but I had to change two parameters. One was to select something other than SWM dish (I don't remember what that parameter was) and then I was allowed to select the round dish type. both of these parameter changes were on the same screen.
I also have a in-line signal strength meter that illuminates via LNB coax power from the receiver. When the receiver was set to SWM, power is not sent up the coax, but when the proper type dish is selected in setup the light turned on! A separate power supply was not required when connecting directly to the Winegard single LNB dish on the motor home.
The next step is enter the zip code for proper angles for the dish...but you probably all ready know how to do all that...

we just got new receivers for our house or rather added 2 receviers so we could use the 2 old ones in the coach. The new one are running off the SWM.
Which means your using a single line from the dish. but you will receive multiable satelitte.
I ask the installer how to set up the older recevers for our coach.
He showed me this.
On the menu in the receiver there is set up for which dish you will be using. And yes you can use a HD receive on your tv as rustyjc had stated.
here is a link to a good and very reasonable dish with tripod set up
Directv Oval 18x20 in. Triple LNBF Satellite Dish Tripod Kit *::*Tripod System Kits*::*Satellite Dish Tripods*::*InstallerOasis.com
So it you change your receiver to a 18 x 20 dish, You will be able to have great directv. It is an easy dish to set up and please note it is not HD. The HD dish is much large and harder to set up.
You can also use the round dish. But it only can be set to one satetille so you will not receive as many channels. And no locals not even one from your home zone.
We were also told that while traveling we will beable to receive our local Florida stations. Even As far away as Wisconsin but we would not get the Wisconsin local. But not on the round dish.
So those we will pick up OTA.
Hope this helps

Actually, as long as we're within the ~100-200 mile spot beam radius, we get our Houston local channels on our single LNB round dish.

Best thing to do is keep the Directv 800-531-5000 number on hand, the last two times I tried I kept getting an error code 771, I called the automatic customer service and when they ask for the extention I wanted I said 771 and a live person corrected the problem fast, and we had TV. The error message appears in the lower right corner.
Follow the above instructions to get the dish properly aligned, be sure the tripod is 100% straight up and down, don't know why this is important but is very much so.
I used my reciever in the middle of Kansas 1300 miles away and it did great.

Sniggles,
Whoever told you that you would get your local Florida channels while sitting in Wisconsin does not know what they are talking about.....won't happen.
For the original poster, my suggestion is get a tripod with a single LNB round receiver and a standard def receiver (add one to your current home account) and do it the easiest way....since you don't expect to get HDTV anyway.
good luck
