I have a friend who moved out of his house and I was wondering if I could take the directv dish off the roof and mount it on a tripod and use it with my tt

Yes, but who owns the antenna? I understand the reason why a satellite company will leave a dish antenna on a roof. It is an advertisement for the new occupant, hoping they will subscribe to the service. Now, that being said, if you have a new company come in they will put their own dish antenna on the roof. They could care less what you do with the old one, and they sure will not give it back to the old company.

Will any one miss the antenna? Probably not. Is it legal to take? Probably not, but that is a discussion for a lawyer.

Make sure you repair the roof if yo take it down.

Thanks for the replys I was looking at the dishes on my roof and I have 3 I am going to guess one of then is hd one is local channels and the other OS for everything else?
Two of them look the same accept for one has 2 wires coming out and the other only has 1, the third dish has 3 or 4 of the different eye pieces

Assuming the set up on his house is the same which one do I use I just want the main channels I don't care about the hd

The same dish will get both HD and locals. Were these left over from an earlier owner?

Most be repeats.. you only need one dish.

I'm thinking the one with 3-4 LMBs is the oldest, with the 2 wire next, and the 1 wire the newest... at least that was my upgrade path.

My guess is the 3 or 4 LMB is the newest, that will get you local channels, DVR and HD.
The 2 cable is next newest as both cables are needed to run a DVR, and single cable is the oldest.
My son used to be a Directv installer and rewired my MH with DVR's front and back, and my next project is to add HD to the MH.

When you mention the "main channels", do you mean the local channels like ABC, CBS NBC and FOX? If you travel very far from home, you will not get them on Directv, and I think Dish is the same way. The local channels are on a 'spot beam' and you can not get them once you leave your home location, not sure of exact range. I went through all this when I set up my dish in the MH, and it isn't simple. Even if you already have Directv and take the receiver box out of the house and put it in your TT, you will get all the channels you pay for at home, EXCEPT the local channels. You can pay extra for them to get them wherever you go, but not real cheap. What we do is hook up the cable tv that most rv parks have and use that for local channels, just switch back and forth with Directv channels.
If you only want basic tv, then the one cable dish will work, but if you want to use a DVR, then you need the 2 cables coming in from the dish.

Not entirely true. I use the DVR from the house when I take off in the RV. I can record or watch TV with it,... but only one channel at time.

Yes, you are correct, but you are using the DVR as a standard receiver and not as a DVR, you can watch a show and record it at the same time, or record it when you are gone and watch it later.
But IMHO, the point of having a DVR is the ability to watch one show and record another show at the same time, and you can't do that with one cable input.
I guess what I should have said is that you can't use a DVR receiver to its full potential with only one cable input.
