Yes, for less money and a considerably higher bandwidth (not to mention not having to manually set up and aim dish antenna, and not to mention all the performance complaints I saw on the Starband forum) you can just go with Millenicom in the US, which would be better for most users. In Canada you can buy a cellular hotspot from Rogers or another Canadian carrier along with pay-as-you-go service for again, more performance at a lower cost.
But... there is the big condition that you have to be within cellular range and if not it's good to know that there is at least one affordable satellite solution. Trouble is, as you mentioned one of the biggest needs for such service is in Canada/Alaska, which is a no-go.
