OK, I'm new at this and I have posted a question about Dish and Kingdome. I have solved my old problem but I'm still not satisfied. I now have a Dish Network VIP722k receiver and want to use it on the road. I know that the Kingdome satellite in not going to work with it and I do want to watch HD in my RV. Do any of you recommend either a roof mounted replacement for my RV or a standing portable satellite? I don't want to spend a whole bunch of money if I can help it and I don't mind the work of setting up the satellite each time I move. I just have been bombarded with info from my local Dish Network tech and I'm still not sure what to do. If you can offer me an free advice I would be so thankful.

RON

You can get a Dish residential antenna and LNBs, either a 1000.2 or 1000.4 depending on if you need western or eastern arc. You will then need a tripod to hold the Dish.

If you had a VIP211k receiver, I'd suggest the Dish Tailgater which retails for about $370. But you have a VIP722k which does not currently work with a Tailgater.

So . . . if you go portable, I'd suggest a 1000.4 dish ($60 - 70) because it can use either an Eastern Arc LNB arm (sats 61.5, 72, 77) or a Western Arc LNB arm (sats 110, 119, 129).

Next, get a good tripod because triple LNB dishes like the 1000.4 are big and heavy. These guys sell a heavy duty tripod "apartment/condo" package for about $120: Apartment & Condo Renter's Satellite Tripod Package

Finally, get a good signal strength meter. I use the Accutrac III+ ($210) because it's one of the few meters that lets you watch the signal strength of all three sats at the same time: Acutrac III Plus Satellite Meter is the best meter for DirecTV and DISH Network

I have a VIP722 receiver here at the stick house. I take it with me on the road every time we travel. I first used a King Dome on a 5er and I had no problems in receiving any of the Dish network channels. That was back in the 2007-2008 time frame. I then purchased an MH and it did not have a satellite antenna. Not wanting to put a big hole in the roof I opted for a Dish 1000 satellite antenna. I used a tripod to mount it on. I also drilled out the rivets on the arm so it could be disassembled for travel. It was a triple horn LNB so the few times i was able to "tune" it in i received all three satellites as if I were here at the stick house. The catch phrase there was "few" times tuning it in. It was a stinker. Most times I could only pick up two of the three dish satellites. One day I went out and purchased the Winegard Carryout. It has worked flawlessly in it's capacity every time I have set it up. The only exception is in heavy wooded area I may only be able to get one bird, but that was acceptable for a one or two night stay.

There is no dome on the market that will get all 3 birds of Dish at the same time, but the Dish system will get HD. No dome on the market will get DirectTV HD.

You can set up the VIP 722 just like you do at the stick house using two inputs and a distribution output to the back bedroom television. Depending on the antenna you use and its capabilities will determine what you watch on each television. If you need more specifics, holler.

The Winegard Trav'ler is a triple LNB automatic dish that works well with the 722. That is the setup we use.

X2... set it and forget it.Sure it's a tad on the spendy side, but well worth it. I had the regular dish on a tripod when we had the TT and when we got the MH,I just went ahead and got the Traveler and haven't regretted the cost.

Roof mount or Tripod? I recommend BOTH. But wait, don't reach for the wallet yet.

The King Dome is a Ku band antenna, Dish uses Ku band and WILL configure to use the king dome at least in limited mode (Choose DISH300 on Menu-6-1-1 page)

Now.. the problem with that is that the King Dome is either a single or dual (Means one LNB, one or two output connections) not a Twin (2 LNBs or Triplet (What you think) The receiver you have uses a triple.

This means it can see one sat, one out of six that your receiver can use (2 groups of 3) So you only get PART of your programming.. The network stations are on 119

However that said.. You may need a software upgrade for the king Dome depending on the model and age.

IF you do go with an alternative roof mount.. ALL domes have the same limits as I just described.. ALL of them. However in-motion is possible so you can record the "Daytime Dramas" as you drive. DISH types need to be matched to the receiver (DISH 500 or 1000.n) and can see both/all 3 satellites at the same time... HOWEVER can only be deployed when parked.

BOTH have an issue with being parked under the evil signal eating tree.

Thus, put a simple low cost A/B switch in the LNB line(s) near the receiver, run brand new RG-6 from the "B" port on the switch to a connector,, I use a ground block on the brake bell crank bracket down below (Notice a plethora of "B"s there) but a Bulkhead (Through wall) or a ground block in the Basement will work just as well.

A goes to the Roof mount up A-bove

The remaining port (Switched) goes to the receiver.

If parked under evil tree

Hook up tripod mount. Slide switch to "B" aim, check switch enjoy

To unhook slid switch to "A" before disconnecting and again run Check Switch once in the clear.
