Dish Programming Price Increase

I got this e-mail notification today:
--------------------------------------------------
"Starting February 2014, DISH is changing pricing on select programming and services. Most customers will see a $5 increase on their core programming package. You will receive detailed information about these changes in your next bill.
Thank you for being a valued DISH customer."
--------------------------------------------------

Is it just me - why do these things cost so much?...anyone else get a similar notice?

Safe Travels

It costs so much because we get 200 chanels:
28 infomercial channels.
16 foreign language (I can only understand English)
12 religious
18 alternate sports that have nothing on them
52 duplicates
37 music only
29 pay per view movie
That leaves eight, four of which don't work if you move your rig more than 200 miles.
So when you break this down to cost per watchable channel you get... Let's see...
Holy c**p! Why am I dong this???

When you consider that we pay a monthly charge to obtain Dish or Direct, then on top of that we are forced to watch commercials for which they are paid handsomely for.
All of this done through the tax paid by citizens of the U.S. while NASA was creating the sateliite program. I believe they should all offer a Ala Carte program and you pay for what you want to watch. I had dishes of kind or another for over 40 years and I still watch the same programs that I always have watched. Exception being RFD-tv which in my estimation is the best TV source ever created. I was more than happy to pay "extra" to get it.

The content providers, not Dish or DirecTV, get the money from commercials.

Even though the first satellites were pioneered by NASA, commercial satellites are funded by the companies that use them.

IMHO Dish and DTV can get away with what they charge because they have had a lock on the market. However, both they and the cable companies are losing customers as more and more people stream content from the internet. Eventually this should force them to change their business models.

Seeing as how I cannot afford to send up my own satt into space about 32000 miles up, and arrange programing for that satt, nor know what to do to program it once it's there, and find my lifestyle is much more pleasant with paid satt, especially with the ability to record up to three programs at a time even while watching a program already saved thus deleting the way too long advertising, and by dividing the hours of pleasure into the hundred bucks a month spent, I conclude that it a damn good deal.

If I could pay only a hundred bucks a month for other things that brings joy into my life, then, and only then would I be money ahead.

If the time comes that I do not figure that satt TV is not a good deal, I can always revert to over-the-air!

About the same on billing, but I believe I have only rented 2 movies from them in the last year. I use RedBox, Netflix Streaming and Hulu Plus Streaming here at the S&B. I'm thinking of dropping Hulu Plus and going with RedBox streaming. All three of the streaming packages are $8 each per month. How many movies off each can you watch in a month.

Yes, not all the "first releases" are available, but eventually they show up on one of the 3. Besides, I can stream some TV episodes that we may have missed.

The $5 a movie is ridiculous and they will continue to charge that amount as long as there are those who purchase them.

Where I camp, there is enough OTA TV to keep me entertained. No need for satellite.

The choice is always ours. Pay or leave, it's up to you. If I were charged for the channels I watch they'd get about $10.00 a month out of me. That's why they don't offer ala carte. Instead I pay 100, now 105 a month in Feb. If I didn't have a DVR, I wouldn't watch tv at all. The commercials are mind numbing.

What has not been mentioned is FCC rules that ensure "access" to a variety of programming.

No need to name specifics, but I'm sure we all know the networks or channels the would probably cease to exist if it wasn't for the way cable and SAT are forced to package channel line-ups.

It is pretty amazing how for $50 a month, I can view programming from 3 SAT's that are floating stationary over 22,000miles up in space. We are lucky to live in this age - despite some problems beyond our contol.

Safe travels
