We have Dish in our MH and take one of the bedroom receiver with us when we travel which has the All Amer. service so we can get the major network channels. However, we would like to be able to get the programs we record at home on the DVR while on the road. Is there a way to do this? Would Slingbox be the way to go, or is there another better way? My problem with Slingbox is our internet service is via Sprint card which we take with us so I think I would have to add another internet service for home use in order to connect with Slingbox.

Also, we really don't have a use for a telephone land line at home anymore but Dish seems to require we be connected to a land line at home. Is this true? If we want to use only our cell phones and drop AT&T service will Dish drop us?

Thanks,
RJ

Ask Dish why you need the land line, I had dish for years without one. I could be wrong but the land line is used for On Demand movie purchases and nothing else. We now have Direct with no land line and everything works well including down loaded reciever software updates.

Any attempt to access your home recordings via a Slingbox or equivalent will use up the data limit on your Sprint card in no time. Video takes a LOT of bandwidth, compared to email and (non-video) web browsing.

I don't have a land line either (just use the cell phones) but do have internet via cable. The dish receiver can also be connected via the internet through the router. However if you don't have a high speed internet connection or a land line connected to at least one of your Dish receivers they charge you an extra $5 per month, they won't drop you. This usually happens when we take our DVR out of the house with us when we are gone for several months during the summer. I have not seen them and the charge when the DVR is gone for just a few days.

Had Dish for eight years but when we had a problem could not talk to anyone in the U.S. and they treated us badly so we now are using cable in parks for now. For sure Dish does not care about their long time customers.

There was a company selling Dishnetwork at the Winnie rally a few weeks ago who was actually recommending the 211 receiver and then a separate DVR box. They said the dvr box can be bought anywhere. The advantage of it is you pay a one time $40 fee to your provider, in this case Dish, then no monthly dvr fee. If you are recording to a separate box at home you could take it with you on the road, IMO.

There was also a Dish rep there who confirmed during a seminar that as of Nov they will be able to again offer the national netoworks and we won't need All-American.

BTW, the package they were offering has no contract. It is a month to month deal. Since I am fulltime and already have service I did not find out what exactly they were selling but I think it was the receiver only. I can try to find the name etc if anyone would like it.

If the receiver doesn't have some way to contact Dish Network, they will not drop you, they will just charge you $5 per month.

However, it does NOT take a land line for the receiver to be in touch with Dish Network. We don't have a land line at home, so when Dish Network came out to the house to set us up, the guy installed a SlingLink Turbo device...one end is plugged into an electrical outlet, the other end is plugged into one of the LAN ports on our Cradlepoint router. The main receiver in the living room has a small antenna at the back for picking up the signal sent out from the SlingLink Turbo device.

This is what we have: Dish Network SlingLink Turbo W1 SL300-100

Dish has never charged me for not having a land line.

We use DVR at home and a 311 on the road.

Don't know the cost but you could get another DVR for the road. Maybe buy one on E-Bay

We have Dish and have never connected to a land line. When we subscibed they told us it was for pay-per-view or diagnostics only. We've never paid extra for no land line availability.
We too take an extra receiver for M/H use.
I agree since tech support moved to New Dehli it has gone from exceptionally good to mediocre at best.
Dish offered us an extra box for the M/H for $5.00/month. They also state if you call them they will set you up with local channels wherever you are (if you already subscibe to that option).

Most, if not all, Dish receivers have a USB port so you can connect an external hard drive. There is a one time charge ($40 I think) to use an external drive. Then you can transfer all of your recordings to the drive and connect it to another receiver. A 1 TB drive will hold about 1,000 hours of SD programming. We have about 840 shows left on our external drive, so there is always something handy to watch.

The only catch is that it doesn't work if the satellite dish is not connected. You can't just fire up the receiver and watch the recordings without an active connection to the dish. You can use multiple hard drives. You're not limited to one. Their format is proprietary, so don't expect to hook up the hard drive to your computer and transfer files.

Dish has or just is dropping the $5 monthly fee for not being connected with a phone or internet connection. I have seen the 211k receiver working just fine when folks are away on the road but have yet to try it yet myself . . . will soon.

Couldn't agree more
