Dish vs DirecTV?

Im a longtime direct tv subscriber with 2 dvr's and an automatic 2004 rooftop dish which is not HD. I pay DTV $130./month. I want to upgrade the rooftop dish to HD and I wonder is its time to go to Dish TV.

Direct tv is ok but I dont have any knowledge of Dish. Thoughts?

Is your direct tv account for your house? If your current receivers are SD, just change out your receivers to hd. I f this account is for your RV and you have SD receivers, you will need HD receivers to receive the HD signal

We've been DirecTV subscribers at home for close to 15 years. Our coach's previous owner had a Winegard Traveler satellite system for DirecTV installed - so a working DirecTV satellite was on the coach when we bought it. I purchased as DirecTV HD DVR box for $200 ... and added it to our home account. It costs me roughly $7 per month - the cost of having an additional receiver on our home account - which gives me access to all the programming we receive at home (including all the premium channels). The only thing we DON'T get in the coach are local channels (unless we're VERY close to home!). We use "air TV" for local channels wherever we are - or simply go without. If you chose DirecTV over Dish for your home setup - I'd stick with it for your coach.

I have the Dish Tailgater service which I can turn on and off as needed. It is automatic and with the 120 channels, many in HD with HBO, SHO and STARS I pay just over $100 a month. An easy phone call nets the local channels when I change locations.

Ok. As I said, my rooftop auto dish is not HD so I need to upgrade that first and then upgrade the boxes with HD boxes. So since Im changing the hardware, I might switch to dish too. Direct tv works well but its too expensive. They are just another big business now since bought out by ATT.

The tailgater says is works in HD with direct and Dish. $700 or $1200 for the tv in motion model.ts

There are two different Traveler sat rooftop dishes. One works with Dish and one works with DirecTV. The Dish model is slightly more expensive and will only work with Dish. The DirecTV model can be converted to Dish if you change your mind later on your service provider. The conversion kit costs about $300 plus about $200 labor. Both Dish and Direct have almost the same programming and are close in price. Dish has a little better customer service and is better at changing your locals. Dish also has Pay As You Go if you are not full time. Dish has the Hopper receiver and Direct has the Gennie. Both have a DVR. If you go with Dish you can get a portable automatic sat dish as a backup if you are parked under trees.

My MH came with a Winegard rooftop satellite TV antenna setup for DirecTV. Since that's what I have in my house, I stuck with it in the MH. Been disappointed with DirecTV. Their support for RVs is close to zero. I can't get local channels even in my home zipcode. I signed up for the network feeds and did all the legal stuff to get them. Can't get those either and no one can tell me why. Winegard help is also a joke. A couple RVers have told me that this is NOT a problem with Dish. So maybe soon I will ditch DirecTV at home and on MH and get Dish

Have you checked channels 390 and up for your network channels.

I just upgraded my 1 old DTV standard def receiver to a H24-100 high def. It would not get local channels and my grandfathered distant channels till I added a "B Band converter" to the satellite input. Try this.

Good luck- hopes this works

Hi folks,

I have had both direct tv and dish over the years and I have to say dish is head and shoulders above direct IMHO.... we just picked up our new phaeton 40IH which had an inmotion winegard T4 on the roof set up for direct .... I reset the switches on the dish on the roof and within minutes I was watching all the same channels as inside my house... I just installed the receiver from our newmar which we traded. I ordered an X2 wingard portable dish due to the fact that the traveler which was only a year old on the old coach would not always pick up if there were trees etc such as in our yard where we park it. Turns out the T4 works in the exact same spots our traveller would not... I sent the X2 back ... didn't need it after all. I was surprised a smaller in motion performed this well.

The support from dish was stellar!

Sorry for the length of the post but seemed like good info to share .
