Dish wouldn't change my Local Channels

Got into Alpine, Tx today, set up my Tailgator and everything worked fine from about 3pm until 8pm. At 8pm had a total signal loss, so I went through all the setup stuff a coupla time and finally all was working well, except for the local channels. So, I call the 888 # like I always do when I move (full-timer) and I'm told that I don't have an RV declaration on file so until they get one, they won't change my local channels. Told them I've been a customer for 2 years and have never had this told to me when changing locals. They said it had always been a policy but they just started enforcing it because people are moving a lot (go figure).

So I ask, what I would have to do, they said "you can fax us a copy of your RV registration, I said [Moderator Edit]? Then they said well, just take a picture of your RV and email it to us," I said [Moderator Edit]?

I then said well, that's a pain, you've made a change and never told me about it and asked them to cancel my subscription. I was told there would be an $87 cancellation fee. Told them I wasn't going to pay the fee because they changed the terms. Then they told me they wouldn't cancel my service unless I agreed to their termination agreement (in which I'm pretty sure would be an agreement to pay the cancellation fee) I told them ain't gonna happen and they said, "we will not cancel your service and keep charging your credit card," and about that time, I hung up, I had had enough.

My next call was to my credit card company telling them not to accept any further charges from Dish, which they agreed to do.

The real problem for me was that Dish had been very go to me, and from what I gather, others in the RV community, but to just arbitrarily change their policy and never tell their customers was enough for me. I would have probably even stayed if they had said we'll change your channels right now, but please send in the rv declaration later. But no, they weren't going to do anything until they had it in hand.

I had to send the declaration last year when I changed to DISH. So it has been around at least since last year.

They got you between a rock and a hard place with so little competition in the market.

Have had dish for over 2 years and never been asked for a rv declaration, but we have a pay-as- you go RV account and no contract. Never had a problem switching our service address to pick up the locals. Sounds like you have home account, might ask them if you can go to the pay-as-you go account.

I didn't either until today.

Month ago I was in San Antonio, had the channels changed, no problem. Girl, told me it had always been on the "books", they are just now enforcing it. In my case anyway!

Last time I spoke to the ID-10-T team at Dish, I got the story that they cannot change your local channels when you move now. The script line was a new Federal law. Sounds like a load of manure to me. They said we had to subscribe to the distant network service to get the major feeds and no local channels.

We have not moved,so we will not find out until April when we move again. Seems thay do everything possible to loose customers.

I gave up on the Tailgator and the VP211 receiver. I had two of each and had the same issue. It would stop switching satellites and I had to do a total reboot and power down to get it back. It would work for a day or two or maybe a week or tow. You never knew.

We used to use our Direct recievers from the house and we did have to send in a RV declaration to Direct and tell them when we used it in our MH and got to be a pain so that's why we now have Direct at home, Dish Pay-As-You go RV only account for HM. RV account has to be seperate from home account and we purchased the reciever.

Coupla things: When you now call the "RV" 888 number they answer "Fraud Division."

I've never had a residential account, and initially service was sent up in my RV in Alamogordo, NM, billing address in Box Elder, SD.

It doesn't make sense, this policy that you can't get local channels, but you can get all the other channels no matter where you are. Dish specifically markets the Tailgater for it's mobility and wants you to do an declaration stating you're doing exactly what they sold it to you to do?

Now if they had said Bubwheat, we have a new policy, so after we get you the local channels today, please send us proof that you are using it in an RV, before you move again, this thread would never had been started.

But they didn't say that, it was no local channels until you send us the proof you are in an RV. I found that not to be very customer friendly.

Since the beginning of satellite TV the Federal rules have been that you can't view an "out of area" channel unless you either were in an area that didn't get any OTA channels or you were in a vehicle or boat or other movable device (I'm just paraphrasing the rules; the exact words are a bit different.) This was all done to appease local advertisers who didn't want you to miss their commercials because you weren't watching local stations.

These rules created the concept of DNS for those people who keep their receivers in RVs and boats. Many years ago Dish got itself in trouble with the Feds for not requiring proof before letting people have DNS and for years they couldn't offer the service; it was offered through a third party. Then a couple of years ago it was offered by Dish but after a brief period they went back to third party service and SD only.

It sounds like they are going through another "adjustment" in their approach to this issue. Since there is overlap in the spot beams for different cities, to fully comply with the federal rules they should require some proof that you are in a mobile location before they simply change which local channels you receive. Otherwise, you could, for example, watch the Ravens play on some weekends and the Eagles play on others all by calling up and telling them you wanted Baltimore or Philly local stations. For many homes in the area between those cities you would have no difficulty of receiving either spot beam if you were authorized. However, by the the Federal regs they have to give you the locals for the metropolitan area your home location is part of.

I recognize that the person the OP spoke with could have been more polite, but it doesn't sound like they are asking for anything all that unreasonable IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I only like Dish better than Direct because of the pay as you go. When I signed up last year I had to send All American Direct a copy of my registration to get the distant network channels out of NY. I am using the 211 receiver and I get the local channels off the batwing. I also have a MYbook disk drive hooked up so I have a DVR service. But I have never been able to get them to switch locals for me.

I have been a Dish subscriber since 1996. I currently have 2 hoppers and 2 Joeys in the house, and 2 211K's in the coach. Two weeks ago we took the coach out for the first time in a few weeks. I had to call Dish to have them send a hit to my 211K's because they hadn't been used. The tech I spoke with complied, and when we were finished, and my service was working, she asked if I needed her to switch my locals to my current location. I have never bothered with this, and declined because I was not far enough from home to lose them. No request for a declaration was made, and my account clearly states that the two receivers are in the coach. When I have issues that go beyond my usual experience I typically send an email to the CEO support address. They take care of the issue, and I'm a happy camper.

I had the same thing happen last year. I asked where I could get the form and they said on the web. Dish does not have the form. I searched the website and could not find it because it is not a Dish policy. It is a separate company. I called back and they changed the zip with no problem. I asked about the form and was told it is not a Dish policy. When I explained what happened they said I should have gotten the name of the person because they were steering business away from Dish to the Pay as you go Dish which is a separate company.

Please share that support email.

Since dropping DNS Dish requires calling in and changing your service address every time you change locations. If you are a snowbird and change twice a year that is not a big problem, but if you are traveling coast to coast it is. One my last 6 week trip the average time for that call was 45 minutes and the success rate for getting the change implemented before moving again was 40%. When successful, it took from 2 hours to as much as three days (and multiple calls) to take affect.

The Dish call centers in the Philippines and Dominican Republic do not understand the pay as you go program and are very frustrating to deal with. I have had no luck finding a responsible department at Dish to discuss the problems they have. Perhaps that email address will offer a portal to someone who cares about product improvement.

Dish asked for no location verification, only that I was in an RV.

Also, it's hard for me to believe that in this day and age, where GPS technology is everywhere, that Dish doesn't know within a 10 ft radius of my exact location within minutes of my receiver dinging the satellite.
