Do People in NYC and LA Need DNS???

Maybe a silly question... but maybe not.

We know that "local channels" are spot beamed by DirecTv and to get "network coverage" when we travel very far we need to have DNS service.

DNS service provides subscribers with feeds from LA and/or NYC.

My question is, do people who have LA or NYC service addresses also lose their network coverage when they travel and have to subscribe to DNS to get network coverage?

Good Question

I think I read once that they are CONUS off the 101 making them available nationwide. Downside is that you would need an LA or NY address and may have to pay their taxes.

If you know the stations you can look them here:

http://www.dbstalk.com/attachment.ph...6&d=1334807071

If the bird is followed by a "c" it is nationwide, CONUS. An "s" means it is a spotbeam.

Hopefully some one from NY or LA will pop up and tell us.

Edit: Looking at the sheet it appears the HD channels are on the 99c and the SD on the 101. They have duplicate listings in the 1-99 range and the 390 - 399 range.

Looks to be true but I still don't know.

Not on your life Jim! I grew up in SF. Like most young boys, I was a big sports fan and learned to HATE anything and everything that had anything to do with "LA". Just the mention of Dogers or Lakers can ruin my whole day!

And, thanks Schneid. FWIW my question is really just a technical one. I'm not looking to somehow bypass my DNS service. Good info though.

At one time those who lived in LA or NYC area did NOT need DNS..

However I seem to recall they were working on "Fixing" that. Please note the level of qualifier is kind of high on that sentence.

And of course if your home billing address is in the middle of "No tv land" then you may qualify for DNS in your home as well. In which case my standard advice of "Get and RV account" does not apply.

How to tell if you need DNS or not.

IF your LOCALS come in on channel numbers 2 to 70 (non inclusive) you do.

If they come in on something like 8xx. you don't. (Exact channel depends on service provider)
