While we wait for winter to fade and Spring arrive, this is a good time to think about a weather radio for your RV if you do not have one.
Such a radio can give you a heads up about approaching severe weather.
I have a dual powered (120 volt/battery) unit that is always on. It has the "alert" function and can be programmed for the county we are camping in. However, I leave the radio programming alone so that I get all hazards warning as issued for the region we are in.

My CBs have weather bands but I listen to them infrequently.
In California, we rarely have weather that hazardous and nobody can predict earthquakes yet.
Mostly I want wind reports.

Yes. We also have a model from Radio Shack.
Since last April it has alerted us to severe weather in Texas, Oklahoma and Florida.
It only makes sense to be aware of what is going on out there!

Do your stereo and walkies activate automatically and sound the warning when the weather service posts watches and warning?

We have a Midland Weather Radio and keep it plugged in where ever we are. I want to know in the middle of the night if bad weather is approaching.

Having and using a weather radio is a good idea, but another thing everyone needs is a plan in the event of a weather warning. If severe weather such as thunderstorms, wind, and tornadoes is possible, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the campground and to check with the office for a safe place to go in the event your radio goes off (especially in the middle of the night). Sometimes you only have minutes to react so knowing what you will do and where you will go in advance is key.

I think that the first thing to do is to learn a bit about the NOAA Weather Radio SAME system. It is probably a good idea to consider receivers with this in mind.
Does the radio listen to all 7 channels for SAME alerts?
How difficult is it to change the location code for alerts? (see SAME codes for states, counties, and territories)
Can you set the radio to only announce specific alerts (see SAME codes for message types) and are there different levels of alarm supported?
Will the receiver run off a 12v RV system?
Can an external antenna be used?

Yes radios with the SAME system included are a wise choice.
Most radios will scan for the strongest signal and lock on it so as to give Alerts for your location.
Some units do have a provision to change the SAME code. Some do this via computer USB connection.
Some radio's announce all hazards and some can be programmed to only provide specific hazards.
The level of the alarm is set by the NWS, you control the volume.
Power on some is via a 120 volt adapter with battery backup, others are battery only.
Some do have a provision for an external antenna.
There is a wide range of products so it is difficult to list all features. I suggest a Google search or start at Radio Shack.
