Does the RM7710 have alternate routing ?
I just got a Magellan RV9165T-LM and it does not have one feature I want which is alternate routing to a destination. Does the RM7710 have that?

Not really. You can avoid individual segments of a route that is already planned, but it takes forever. Meaning for example, if it said, route 20 for 10 miles, keep left on route 20 for 8 miles, bear right on route 20 in 1 mile - you would have to avoid each one of those segments individually if you wanted to avoid route 20. There is also no way to tell it to take a specific route. It has the standard avoid - tolls, interstates, ferries, border crossing, etc.. Of course I am a bit technologically challenged, so there may be a feature hiding in there that I have missed.

I have an old TomTom that I can ask it to select an alternate route
if I don't like the one it has picked. I would have assumed that any more advanced GPS would have that feature. Go figure!

Hmmm. I just give it a couple "via" points that I know will cause it to route where I want and I'm good to go. The only issue I have with that is that it shows ETA to the next "via", rather than to the final destination.

Yes, as mentioned you can add a via. It will show the via as a destination, and ignore your final destination. But as soon as you arrive at the via it gives you the option of continuing on to the final destination or to cancel, etc.
If your used to a Garmin it seems strange but it works out just fine.

There are two alternates: Fastest or Shortest.
Once you have set your destination, tap on the gear icon in lower left then 'Route Settings' in lower right then 'Route' - to toggle between fastest and shortest.
Other than that, you would have to use the 'via' options as already suggested.
By the way, I think the 7710 is one of the best units out. We took it to Hawaii last year to use in a rental car and it never let us down once.

The 9165T went belly-up on a trip. I replaced it with the 7710 and it is great except for the display problem.
