This has been discussed to some degree in other posts, but thought it would be worth reposting. I recently followed the instructions on the Dome Magic product, using alcohol to clean my dome and then applying Dome Magic. Now I have a grey, streaked, spotty, ugly dome. Contacted KingControls and confirmed that I have in fact ruined my dome. They state that Dome Magic is not to be used on black domes, even though the can that I have contains no such warning. We are working out what it's going to take to get me a new dome (the tech has to talk with management on Monday to see what they'll do). For those of us with black domes experiening rain fade, they recommend Rejex, which should be available at your local autoparts store. They said Rain-X would also work, but Rejex is most like their Dome Magic product. Here's to hoping nobody else ruins their dome!
Thanks,
Alan

Thanks for passing that info on. I'm sure those with black domes will appreciate the heads-up.

Been there done that. I now have a white cover. I was not aware that Kingdome now says not to apply it to a black dome at all. That was not the story I got 2 years ago.

Is this a Kingdome problem? I have a black KVH and so far have used RainX on it with no problems at all.

No, it's KingControl's Dome Magic product, which is supposed to help with rain fade. The instructions say to use alcohol to clean the dome before applying. I believe that is where things go bad. Unfortunately, the can of Dome Magic I had, contained no warning regarding the color of the dome. Anyway, they recommend Rejex, or Rain-X, instead of their Dome Magic, on anything other than a white dome. So sounds like you're doing the right thing already.

Thought I'd post an update. Apparently the rubbing alcohol is not the beginning of the problem as I had thought. The Dome Magic is not clear, so leaves it looking bad. King Controls called back and said that in fact rubbing alcohol will remove the Dome Magic and leave the black dome as good as new. So I tried it over the weekend, and with a little elbow grease, they were right on the money. Looks great again. So, still don't use Dome Magic on a black dome, but if you do, rubbing alcohol and a little work with a micro fiber cloth will get it off. Use one with the rubbing alcohol, and second clean cloth to buff it out.
