When I Google AVG Free Anti-Virus I get quite a lot of sites to download it from. cNet being one of them.
Is there any particular site to download it from or does it not really make any difference, all being the same? Or does it expose a person to unnecessary exposure to future advertising from certain web sites? Notice some of them are strickly the free version and others also have the fee version of AVG.
Kind of confusion, appreciate any suggestions.

Last time I downloaded it I got it direct from the AVG Free site. I also use the Cnet site and don't get extra emails or advertising/

I would trust CNET over most others for download, I've used it for years with no problems, On this new laptop I went with Avast instead of AVG and think I like it better. One advantage, it seems to take a lot less time to update. AVG would slow my computer down for a lot more time than Avast. Avast has trapped a couple of Trojans lately when my wife was surfing facebook sites.

On my new PC, built in early 2011, the builder installed Avast and suggested I try it. I'm by no means a PC pro, but I do think I like it. It's a busy program as it let's me know almost every morning that it did something for me ? Maybe their all good, used AVG for years with no complaints, but will stay with Avast for now.
I would be very carefull who I download the free software from as I believe "nothing is free." I just want to have a confortable feeling of what it's costing me, advertising, selling my address, etc. I feel better by going to the orig. software provider.
Oh Well, just watching the BCS game and rambling. Life's good. clink/clink, To Ya.
My .02 worth.

Just recently I upgraded to the AVG 2012 (free), and have had problems since. Part of the time it works ok, other times it tells me the download did not complete therefore I am exposed, then it flips back to OK. Up to now, I have used Avg Free for many years with out a problem. I have sent a contact to them to clarify the problem, but in a week no forthcoming reply. I think I might give the Avast a try. I don't want any more tool bars though.

I'm sure most of you already know this, but before installing a new anti-virus program, be sure to uninstall the one you now have to prevent problems. Been there and have the scars to prove it...

Yup, they always try to lead you to the Pay version of AVG, just gotta be careful.
I used AVG Free for many years and always recommended it but not any more. I feel it has gotten too bloated and lost its efficiency. I've switched to Microsoft Security Essentials. It is free - there are no pay versions - very unobtrusive and does not slow down your system.
Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows
Obviously, this is for versions of Windows (XP thru 7) only.
As REwahoo sez, remove any old anti-virus programs first!

There was distinct directions on the download through AVG that no uninstall was necessary as it was built in to the 2012 version. I did however after several days of erratic service, try to uninstall the 2011 version. I got the same message that part of the installation was not finished. This went on for days. I think. Not sure I have it working OK now. I do not have any idea what the problem was or is.

As others have said uninstall different anti virus programs before installing new ones. Having said that alot of the time when upgrading to newer versions of the same program you don't need too as they tend to update the program files. But downgrading to older versions may be prudent to uninstall first.
Be aware though that when trying to remove anti v programs its best to stop the protection engines (real time scanning systems )before starting the uninstall process. This is because most of them detect this as a possible attempt to compromise your system.
Also on rare occasions you sometimes have to delve into the registry because they can leave stuff behind when removed which can sometimes mess with the registry.
Just like trying to remove AOL from my system it had left traces of itself in the depths of the registry.
Remember when trying to uninstall avg that it screwed up and was stuck in a loop and had major issues trying to complete. Had to remove entries in the registry & then program files & folders in the programs directory in the C:/ drive.
After that it was all fine & removed from the system.

Ok sorry for rambling!
Turn off avg /disable it via the avg window ...try uninstalling all /any versions of avg you have on your system. There is an avg removal tool that I found a while back when having the same issues as you describe.
This solved the issue and stopped any of the failed warnings, will try and find it for you.

I own a software company and use Avast only. Best one on the market. The AVG PC tune up is the best on the market to keep your computer running well and clean it up. We run AVG tune up everyday and see over 600 errors and problems that happened in just one day. Think of how many you have if you never run a tune up program.
AVG tune up also uninstalls all programs completely and you can edit your start up programs so you don't load a lot of garbage. Well worth the $$

I'm a retired IT guy (40 plus years) and use bothe Avast and AVG free versions on a variety of PCs. Both are good some years AVG is better some years AVAST is better. Check reviews on PCworld mag for unbiased opinions. I usually go to Filehippo.com for safe downloads. Look at the right of the page for a green "download the latest version" column and click the yop link. There are a lot of come-on ads but the site is safe. That said-always be alert for viruses and links that try too sell paid versions.
