Well, I just joined the 21st century, in cell phones, this month. I was given- for an early birthday gift- a Samsung Droid Charge smartphone.

Coming from a 'plan Jane' cell phone, with only a camera, no internet or text, this is a huge leap for me and I have become completely enamored with it. Especially apps. Wow, NOW I understand what all the fuss has been about!!

My question is for those of you with Droids; what are your favorite apps and why?

A few apps that I have found, that I really like are:

"A Online Radio"-- Whatever type/era of music you like, it's in this app

"Beat the Traffic"-- you can see the traffic, in your area, to know where the heavy traffic is and where the accidents are so that you can- possibly- move around it.

"Bookmark Manager"-- this app allows you to sort/delete/add/ launch your Internet bookmarked sites.

"Colornote"--- this allows you to make notes, lists, check lists and color sort them.

"Gas Buddy"- you can see all the gas stations, in the area you are, and sort the results by price.

"Google SkyMap"-- uses your GPS to show you the stars, with the star names. Great for knowing what you are looking up at

"HBO Go"-- if you have HBO, then you can use this app to watch anything on that site. I have found that you need to have a strong 3G or better 4G for this. If you have a weak 3G, then you will only get the sound, but not the video.

"NASA"- more cool stuff than I can list here. Really enjoy that one.

"WSDOT"- this is the Dept of Transp. for WA state. Lot's of cool stuff on that one, to include where the current construction is and the pending construction area's.

I have others, but these are my favorites. Would love to be directed to lot's more

Sheila

I've only had a Tracfone before now because all I was interested in was,... (get this) to MAKE CALLS. Never had any other interests like picture taking, (I use a CAMERA for that) reading my email, (while driving no less) I usually pull into a Micky "D"'s and use my laptop for that one.

But I recently heard that there is a "AP", kinda a foreign word to me, I guess, that can locate TV satellites . Since I travel a lot and take a portable dish, it would be very handy to 'know' just where my satellite is in relation to the trees around me.

I still like my Tracfone, it works better than my wife's Nextel. Her phone plan is $30 a month where my Tracfone is $100 a YEAR.
But I'd like to know if anyone uses the satellite locator AP. If it works well, I'll need to find a cheaper way to use it. I DON'T need a $100 a month phone.

Well, maybe not really cheaper, but I am saving my pennies for an iPad2 3G with the $25/mo data plan. Besides running the same cool apps like the satellite locator, rig leveler and so on, I can use it as a ATT Wifi hotspot when we lose our Millenicom (Verizon) 3g data.

We'll be keeping our cheapie Straight Talk phones.

As far as I know, no pre-paid plan will support the true "smart" phones required to run apps. Maybe in the future...

Chief,
Sorry if the above post didn't make any sense. My Wi-Fi went out and a post I made didn't make it to the board.
This was the missing post:
I think your right, Chief.
I stopped in at the Sprint store today. They had a little thingie similar to an I-pad, I guess but a lot smaller, yet about 4 times larger than a phone. It was $200 and the cheapest plan was $29/mo. She said you didn't need a plan if you didn't use the phone portion, just Wi-Fi. With Wi-Fi you can use any APs as well as view your email.

Interesting to me.

It has been proven by all the Droid geeks that a task killer sucks your battery. Don't install one, the phone is smart enough to manage the apps and your battery will not suffer.
