I don't even use a tripod with my Align-a-Sight. I use a 24" round piece of pine from Home Depot and put a few coats of polyurathane on it. Mounted a pipe flange on it and a short section of pipe. That's it. I can put a couple big rocks on it if it is windy but that is usually not necessary.

Finally resolved my alignment issue....had to move the antenna up 6 degrees from Dish's listing to pull them in. Mounted a refurb LNB and good to go now.
Moral of the story: don't believe everything you read for settings from the supplier or satellite provider.

My directv dish got knocked over last weekend at the races. It dented the dish and scuffed the piece on the middle sticking out. I stood it back up and setup it back up and got it dialed in to 96% on 99 but it flashed some error on the tv I couldnt read but my tv worked all weekend. Should I worry about it or replace the parts before leave next week again?

If it still receives, I'd be using it....dent around the rim won't bother it....if the arm sticking out is pretty much still in line, it also will be ok...

When I set up my dish/tripod the DirecTV HR44 receiver and small monitor goes in one lawn chair and I in the other lawn chair. The HR44 has an excellent built in app for tuning in the satellites. I use Satfinder Pro on my Android cell phone. It never takes more than a few minutes to acquire the 101 satellite and peak it up.

What I've found is that because all my programing is on the 101, you don't need to set SKEW at all......

Satellite dish pointer android app to get an idea where the bird is and tune from there, using the HR-24 build in satellite set up meters. Usually up in 10 -15 minutes with the dish looking up at a clear sky. Longer if I got trees / obstacles to get around. I have a 50 foot RG6 cable to move the dish around with
Click on my picture, you can see the dish set up. Bottom stand is from an office chair, 30" post, and dish. If it's windy I fill up a pair of "L" shaped pool corner cover bags. Entire set up breaks down into vinyl bag

I have app on my phone and can see the satellites...so far I use it and then move satellite around....has to be a better way though.

Havent figured out the Align-a-Sight device yet 100% but did find out the problem with my phone. The compass wasnt updating correctly due to a setting, got that straight and setup up the dish and had working tv in just a few minutes.

Every time you use it, do a figure 8 with it, with the screen facing you....smart phones they're not!
