You'll want to do your research and read the pros and cons carefully.
The downside of color devices is that they have to be charged frequently. I read a lot and I don't charge my Kindle but once every three or four weeks. Color devices are harder on the eyes because they are backlit, but you do have to have an external light source with e-ink devices like the Kindle. OTOH, you can read e-ink (non backlit) devices in full sun.
For magazines, color would be important. You may also want to look at an iPad or other tablet computer, which gives you larger pages. You can read Kindle books on the iPad.
Kindle doesn't support library lending now, but it's supposed to sometime this year. You'll want to be sure that your favorite library has a good selection of ebooks that you want to read. Some have a small selection and wait times are long. I've also read rumors that at some point, there may be a limit on the number of times a library can lend a particular book. Once the limit is reached, the library will have to pay for the book again.
I love my Kindle, particularly because I have all my books on one small, compact device. I like being able to change font size, turn pages with the press of one key, and hold the Kindle with one hand. No fighting to hold a book open. One thing to keep track of.
I have paid for some books, gotten a lot of freebies. I read mostly for recreation so I'll read lots of stuff that I wouldn't necessarily buy.
