I currently travel very extensively and I can say that most hotels have pretty good internet access now. This is partly because of higher bandwidth available from ISPs and partially because the hotels have good equipment which controls bandwidth (does not allow a single user to hog too much bandwidth when demand is high). I can usually stream a youtube video in a hotel room quite easily and reliably nowadays. I also have reason to believe that most hotels using bandwidth control measures have isolated users so other users in the hotel can't access each other's computers. It's been a while since I was able to visit the "network neighborhood" and see other hotel user's computers.

What you say is certainly true, however hotels are using software on PC based routers that controls bandwidth in ways that prevent video streaming from negatively affecting routine use of internet channels. The software ensures that each user receives some bandwidth when requested, and takes bandwidth from the "hoggers" when necessary to ensure that the guy in the next room trying to surf the web gets some. This specialized QOS software is available for next to nothing on the internet. The software can let someone stream when bandwidth is available, and throttle them back when it isn't. Combined with a better backbone, hotels are supplying usable internet to most all of their guests these days. Campgrounds can use some of these tools in the same way, but the problem is that many campgrounds are small mom & pop run businesses, and don't have the know how. This does not have to be super expensive to do either...you can load open source software on a decent PC with two network cards and get it up and running for mostly the cost of the PC. Again, the problem is small businesses not knowing what to do.

We were at a CG this summer owned by a young couple who understood the importance of providing high quality internet to their customers. Rather than attempting to do it on their own they were paying substantial monthly fees to a "consulting company" to implement exactly the sort of software discussed above. Every site was limited to a 2Mbps bandwidth which was enough for low res streaming but didn't infringe on the bandwidth of others. It was a great system. It can be done but it requires owners who realize that they can use "excellent wifi" as a discriminator for their business.

I thought the whole idea of "camping" was to be outside enjoying the great outdoors. If all you are doing is sitting in your unit and watching videos?????

If you are living in your RV and working you may be in the wrong place if you are in a "campground". If business requires a high speed connection you should provide it as you need it. You should not expect campers to subsidize your business expenses.

IMO

A tad bit judgmental, don't you think?

I reread the post and agree it could be taken in the wrong context. It was not the intention.

My appoligies to anyone who feels they have been unfairly characterized.

The only part I hate about "bad" internet is the response "well, it's free!"
If advertised as available it is no more free than the wading pool, dog walk, water, sewer, etc.
Right now I am on "free WiFi" in a winter destination spot and it works pretty good. Wait until winter though - I also have a GoPhone Mobile Hotspot too. It works better than the park WiFi but use the "free" as much as possible to keep my data usage down.

FYI we don't "camp" we live full-time in an RV. We enjoy the outdoors but like to also do all the things we are accustomed to doing in a s&b. There are plenty of nice days for sitting outside in the evening and there are also plenty of rainy days and hazy, hot, and humid ones, as well. When we are inside we like to watch TV, surf the internet, stream video, etc. We are equipped to provide all of this ourselves and don't expect a campground to provide it for us, but it is nice when they do.

We are also Fulltimers. We budgeted for Dish TV, a mifi spot and our phones. I'm retired, and the last thing I want to do is complain about WiFi. When we are driving I want the internet on the road. We tend to follow the Sun so we are always in someone's "season". Expecting to streams video during these times is unrealistic and unreasonable. I keep reading things like " I can stream from my phone or data plan but I'm trying to keep my costs down.

The foremost question everyone asks is
"DO YOU HAVE GOOD WIFI"
I hate being told that there is a hotspot
or that WIFI is available.
Parks are charging just about the same as
motels which provide hot showers, full hookup
and great internet.

WAKE UP.
