Fulltimers with DISH -- Big Prob?

We are full time RVers who have just purchased the DISH pay as you go service and a Tailgater satellite dish (made for mobile use). Can anyone help explain 1) why on DISH network satellite service the program guide is only listed in the time zone in which my bill is registered? 2) why I can't get local network programming in the cities I am visiting even though I am using my off-air antenna (through the receiver box).

We purchased what we understood to be a service and equipment made for use by someone who changes location frequently but it does not seem to be responsive to those needs.

Please help.

You should check into DNS or distant network service from dish. It will get you network channels from New York or LA. I have Direct TV with DNS and it works great. Direct TV also has a better way to suspend service. I get local channels from the bat wing.

Call this number, 1-866-609-7374 it goes stright to winegard systems, they are the ones who run the "RV pay as you go" program throught Dish. They should be able to help you out. They have been very helpful.

Your plight is not the antenna or the receiver. it is DISH Networks programming. I don't know why it is like that. When I take our receiver on the road I have to compensate in my mind for the time changes. Sometimes that is a challenge (lol). If you do get an answer from Dish, I'm going to be interested in what they say.

This is very frustrating. If they are offering pay as you go service for people in RVs, it should take into account that you are going to be in different locations. We are fulltimers and are in Florida this week but will be in Arizona next week. It seems to be locked into our mailing address.... not useful for fulltimers.

newleaf - I have Directv and using my remote I select menu, then display and then clock. This allows me to select the time zone I'm in and to auto select daylight savings time. Have you gone through all the menu options?

My pay as you go works like it was advertised, local time, local stations and so on. It is a winegard service through dish, let winegard fix it for you. If you call dish, most of the operators do not even no what you are talking about. The winegard help desk is very helpful. NO I do not work for them, just a happy customer.

Each time you move you need to call dish and give them the new service address. It only takes a couple of minutes. The first time I called I had to tell them we were in the RV after that they did not question. I think they mark the account as being mobile.

I prefer this to using distant network service. I like getting the local news in the mornings.

Dish Network does not have the option of changing the time zone like DirecTV does. The only way to do so is to call Dish Network each time you move to a new time zone and change your SERVICE address. However, while this is a good option for people who move infrequently (2-4 times a year), it's probably not going to be a good choice for those who are on the move every day or every week.

A better solution would be to keep a clock by the TV that is set up for the time zone the Guide is showing.

My answer is to utilize a DVR. I have a 722 and can record up to 3 different programs while watching one that has previously been recorded. I set the DVR to record programs that are not on automatic each morning.

All this allows you to watch your programs whenever you want, regardless of the time they air, in whatever time zone. Insomnia need not be boring anymore!

You might try re-setting your zip code, this MAY affect the time, but as somone else said I think you need to call dish to have them re-address your account. From what I understand from one of my neighbors DISH will do this, no hassle.

A few years back Dish got in trouble for being a bit free with the DNS service, (Distant network, used by people who have no locals or by folks "on the move" like us)

For a while the RV market was more or less closed to Dishnetwork.. This (Unlimited address changes) may be their answer.. I very simply do not know.

I switched to Direc and ended up canceling them and going to Over The Air.

Now.. I do not know about DISHnetwork receivers. but in one rig I was in recently the owner had a modern DirecTV receiver, I noticed in helping him get a singal (Short funny story. He had an automatic rooftop dish antenna ... Set to the wrong statllite, I re-set and instant success).

It had a built in ATSC tuner.. I noted he had no vcr so I took the "Ant leead" for the VCR (TO VCR) and plugged it into the back of the DirecTV receiver, 99% signal strength on one station and that was.. Well.. Typical where I'm parked (I get about 30 "Services" here, each channel can have up to 4 "Serivces" (sub channels).

I get ABC, NBC, CBS, CW and more. I get THIS and ME-TV and more and the last two you can not get on Direc or Dish, or park cable, they very simply do not carry those channels.

2) why I can't get local network programming in the cities I am visiting even though I am using my off-air antenna (through the receiver box).

I'm assuming OTA worked in the previous location:

To get local programming in a new location. Crank up the UHF/VHF antenna, turn on the the Winegard OTA amplifier, on the Dish reciever go to system setup, local channels, scan locals. This process will insert the new local channels in the Dish menu.

Be careful. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the newer sat boxes do not like the voltage from the amplified OTA antenna. I could be wrong, maybe wrong but worth a check.
