Google Maps Ending Jan 29, 2016

We understand that Google Maps will end 1/29/2016. We have been using Google Maps extensively to find destinations, to navigate about town and even archive locations that we want to save for future reference or return visit. We thought we would get a Thread started here to get some discussion going on the uses we all will lose and how we might replace or do without. Right now we are not sure what we will be doing to replace the capability. We also wonder how a number of Apps will be affected that may use Google Maps as part of their routine.

Google’s announcement only related to Google Maps Engine, not any of the other products in the range (some in that list are already defunct). So to understand the announcement, we need to understand what Google Maps Engine is.

Google Maps Engine is going away, not Google Maps. Do a little research and you'll see that there is no change in how we use the app.

Google Maps Engine is a "platform" for Google Maps developers. Anyone but those developers have nothing about which to be concerned.

That said, Google has a history of creating and then abandoning products and product designs. A long view says that this Maps Engine retirement will mean differences in the way the Google Map application works. But that's down the road (pun not intended).

As someone asked, here is a link to a Google announcement regarding the "deprecation" (i.e., the intent to stop supporting) the Google Maps Engine.

Oh great updates. We received an email from Google, but didn't understand it completely. We thought no more Google Maps. We are very glad to learn we were mistaken. Sorry for any anguish.

Give this a try as an alternative. You can also download and use the HERE Maps on your IOS/Android device and use maps offline unlike Google Maps. In full disclosure I work for HERE (Formerly NOKIA), but it is a free product to non commercial users as is google maps.
