We tried using the laptop with a USB plug-in GPS and DeLorme, but we found having the laptop open continuously was just too big for us to handle, especially in the toad.
We still use DeLorme and Streets and Trips for trip planning, but we bought a Garmin Nuvi for use in the motorhome and the car for real-time routing. The model we bought isn't available anymore, but we found it reacts more quickly than our laptop GPS did to route changes and recalculations. The Nuvi also has pedestrian and bicycle modes, and we've even used it while walking in downtown areas.
For any GPS, always check your route, especially for use in an RV. Some units have routing for trucks, but many may take you on dirt roads, narrow streets, dead ends, and under low overpasses.

SECOND For S&T, But a weak second.. There are many mapping programs you can put on your laptop. S&T, Rand McNally products, Co-Pilot and Deloren to name a few.
I feed my laptop with a Garmin E-Trex (Nothing special about it at all, it's not the cheapest Garmin.. But it is #2 on the low end list) Bettertv.com - Home is giving one away today.)
I love the larger display of the laptop.. The ease of using a genuine KEYBOARD to enter search terms and the ability to print it out.
NOTE all the above programs come with an optional GPS usb device
NOTE 2: last year's version.. Costs less than the cheapest Garmin.
NOTE 3:
GPS mag compared top end Garmin, Magellin and Tom-Tom over 3 routes they picked out more or less at random
The results were
3 out of 3
Garmin gave best directions
Magellin was #2
In all 3 cases they got there faster using the Garmin and wound up turning RIGHT into the parking lot
With the other two they ended up making a LEFT turn into the lot. Plus it took longer.

Amazon.com: Garmin Streetpilot 7200 7-inch GPS Receiver - Europe - North America. Does Not include XM Radio: Automotive
This unit is selling for $500 and another seller has the same unit for $1000. You can guess which one I bought. The 7 inch screen is made for an RV. Under the $1000 seller there are 121 reviews by customers. If you read them you will be sold on the unit...but probably not on the one being sold for $1000. It is really worth $500. We bought it in January and it is very easy to operate. Saying the street names aloud is a big plus instead of: turn right in 350 feet. Joe
I forgot to mention that I purchased a refurbished unit with the same warranty for under $300. Just use google and put in "refurbished Garmin 7200". There are many for sale.
Also see it being used on youtube.com

We use Tom Tom 910 Go in the toad and Microsoft Streets & Trips on our dash mounted netbook in the coach.

I use a Garmin NUVI 760.
One is probably as good as another, boils down to features, size and $$$.

I love my Garmin Nuvi 855... the voice commands works great and I don't have to touch the screen to do things... Really helps when your in traffic.
they don't make this model anymore but they do make several new models that have the voice command and I highly recommend it for RVers.

The features that I've found most helpful in a GPS are: - The next turn is listed on a header at the top of the screen.
- An arrow is shown in the upper left corner of the screen showing the direction of the turn off the travel road(this is not lane assist). This can either indicate an exit or a merge onto a different highway. Multiple arrows are shown for the number of lanes with the number of lanes for the intended merge is in bold.
- In the same area of #2 is the distance to the next turn.
I've also notice that when local road changes have been made and there is a conflict between what the voice directions and the displayed directions are telling me I find the displayed directions are more correct.

I have been using a Cobra Navone 2100 for several years now. It has never failed me and the directions are clear. You must learn how to fine tune it so it will not take you on narrow roads, but this is possible. I like Cobra because they have a good reputation in electronics.

I use a Garmin and Microsoft Streets and trips both. The Garmin will sometimes lead you astray whereas the S&Trips can be preprogrammed for a specific route. I like the redundancy of both.

I have two of the Garmin 7200 models. Keep on in the MH and one in my PU so I don't have to swap back and forth. Easy to operate and see.
