How does a fellow go about correcting a road improperly named in GPS data bases??

Google also has it incorrectly named-- They say "they are not doing that right now"

Who's in charge of correcting data base material? Any body know?

Max,

The GPS maker buys a map database publisher's file. There are two major ones to which most GPS manufacturers subscribe. NAVTEQ is one and I think TeleAtlas is the other. The frequency of updates is dependent on how often the vendor releases them and the level of service subscribed to by the GPS maker.

My GPS vendor, Lowrance, only makes an update available once every two years for my model which is obsolete. The database provider, NavTeq, has updates available more often than that because I see that it is used by other GPS makers and they offer more frequent NavTeq updates.

NavTeq and I suppose TeleAtlas have processes through which users may submit corrections to the database. I have seen NavTeq be very responsive and make corrections in a timely manner, though I have not done this myself. I've no knowledge regarding TeleAtlas.

So regardless of your GPA brand, TomTom, Lowrance, Garmin, Magellean, etc., you most likely have a NavTeq or TeleAtlas map database. If you Google them I'm sure you'll find a feedback process to drive the correction you seek.

FWIW

Thanks Dave,

We're trying to correct the GPS data base(s) for a campground in Maine. The street is misnamed in the data bases and it sends folks with GPS's to an incorrect location-- making for (literally) "unhappy campers"-- especially after a long trip on the road .

If you are using DeLorme Street Atlas, you can send changes to them at DeLorme Community • Index page

Since they create their own maps, your street name will probably appear in their next annual map update.

Max, There's only one road in and one road out. Other than that they would get wet in the HABAH.
How can they get lost?

Send a message via ICQ to W8RLM
With Garmin, they ask for map errors ao they can send corrections to the database managers. I get about 2 to 3 updates per year. They have been pretty good about getting changes made by the topographers.
