GPS update problem

So I was given a Rand McNally RVND 5510 for Xmas. Right out of the box it needs to be updated, which I expected. I plug the USB into my iMac, and up come pages and pages of gobbledygook. Adobe Reader doesn't help, nor do any of Microsoft's Office for iMac parts. I'm sure this is not the only update it will ever need, so borrowing someone's PC is not a good answer. I COULD do that and then hit a library every so often I guess....

Anybody got any ideas?

Helped a neighbor set his up using a MAC. There is a separate set of software to download for macs. We followed the instructions and had no issues with updates or initial set up.
