I believe most GPS units have at least 2 views. One is a North Pointing view and the other is a travel direction view.

I prefer the former since my mind looks at maps in the traditional manner.

How about you folks and why do you prefer you method of viewing?

I use direction of travel as opposed to the map always showing N at the top. I also use the 2D view and not the 3D as it just makes more sense to me.

To me, north is up like hamguy said. I think that's because I always like to know which direction (N S E W) is which from wherever I happen to be at the moment without looking at the GPS or a compass. But like Bill, nix the 3-D view.

I always use the "direction of travel up" selection. I have an on board compass and thermometer thing in the overhead between the sun visors. I find the ability to look at my next turn indicator quickly and not have to figure out the information in my head much easier. I think the information and the way it is displayed differently GPS to GPS. At one time we had two different units but have switched to two of the same manufacture to make it easier on our senses of comprehension.

I also have a laptop running Streets and Trips 2010 with the Holux SiRF III GPS unit to assist our travels. That way I have the whole trip planned from home to destination and back and each day I update the next stops into the dash mounted unit.

The S & T 2010 program is easily updated with route construction information and such.

I prefer West sideways and SOP (Seat Of Pants) driving. .

Just kidding. Actually, direction of travel. When I initially began using the GPS it was set to north pointing. It was too much effort reorienting that in head. I can set the compass heading (or MPH or ETA or remaining miles to destination) to display in the bottom corner of the screen if I really want to know the direction I'm headed in.

Copilot DW likes Direction of Travel, 'cause she has trouble with left and right.

I like the map to face north, since I usually know which way I am driving.

Two D definitely. Three D looks like a video game. I prefer the reality I see out the window.

BTW - I use Street Atlas on a laptop stand in my F350 tow vehicle.

Direction of travel makes the most sense to me since it's the same view I've got out the windshield. Also prefer 2D.

I prefer to use north up and 2D. I drove a car carrier for 12 years and am used to orienting myself to looking at a map. That was pre-gps.

North up and 2D. More comfortable being a Pilot and reading sectionals (maps), were always oriented North up and flew compass headings. I guess it depends on what you get used to and is why GPS units give the choice. John H...

I always use direction of travel and 3D - makes left and right easier for me. If I touch the screen, the view instantly changes to north up 2D. I occasionally use this to check overall direction or to see where I am in relation to other roads, etc.
