For those who use a portable Satellite dish this may be what you need.

If you have a iPhone 3 or 4 or an Android Phone, there is an APP (Dish Pointer AR) that shows you where the sats are located with respect to your view of the sky. It uses the built in compass, GPS or WIFI to find your location then the camera view shows the Sat positions. You see right away if the trees or buildings are in your way of a good signal.

Go HERE and check it out.

This APP also works with the new iPod Touch 3 with the new camera function, but you need a WIFI connection. Once it sets the info, you point the iTouch in the compass direction shown on the base of the screen.

I found they are really a lot of people using this one.

I made a little research and found another one , it looks like a cheaper, but I can not say anything more.

I have a KVH tracker on the roof but occasionally trees make it unusable. So, I break out the portable dish and my handy-dandy compass. Armed with those tools and the markings on the dish, I can normally have a picture in <3 minutes.

I have had instances where the satellite has suddenly moved? and when that happens I make a couple crude comments aimed in the general direction of something, and then restart. Again, I normally have a picture in <3 minutes.

The key word is "normally"! My 1st go success is >90%.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuut,

If you are in a location like this

nothing helps but luck, especially with Dish Network

At this location we had no telephone service. Antenna was pointing some where between the branches

I ask in advance for a Satellite friendly site. If they give me ho-hum type answers, I find another park. I will ask about cable and if they offer full service cable I will acceopt that also.

I have had to decline a site only 2-3 times in 7 years and 320+ locations. Of course, the majority of our camping is in the west and forests are not as common.

The APP I initially posted information about is being revised to work without an internet connection. When released it will allow manual entry of your zip code or Lat/Long location settings. It probably will be available in 2 weeks.

See the photo of the view you might get...it will show what may be shielding the signals.
