My neighbor and I were talking today about HDTV. He has a full DISH setup in his house and 5th wheel. He contends that you need all that stuff to be able to get "true" HD and does not believe me when I say I can get HD with my over-the-air antenna and a HD television set.
Hence the wager, its only for $1 so I won't be rich if I win. My OTA antenna receives signals from the major networks in the area (ABC,CBS & NBC) and some of the programs are advertised as transmitted in HD.
Any help convincing him will be appreciated.

You are correct. You can receive Digital HD broadcast TV over the air (if it is broadcast in HD)
I believe that Dish, Direct and Cable all compress there signal using something like mpeg4 (some signal reduction) Over the air broadcast is not compressed.

HD is broadcast over the air...all you need is a TV antenna (regular old TV antenna will work fine) and a HD TV. All you have to be is close enough to the station to get a signal.

Show him one of the many articles that have been written on that subject then ask him what rock he has been living under.

OTA HD TV can actually be better than satellite HD reception as the major networks don't compress the signal. Satellite HD is Mpeg 2 or 4, meaning the signal is compressed, which reduces the quality of the picture. You should be a $1 richer.

I will assume that Shadow asked this question and your neighbor owes him $1 and a doggy bone. OTA programming is now predominately digital (over 90% of all broadcasts) and if that digital broadcast was "filmed" in HD then the picture that you receive will be as good or better than any HD signal coming from satellite.

Thanks for the responses. When I showed them to my neighbor, he promptly conceded and paid up. Shadow is now very happy because we took the winnings and bought some more kitty treats.
