How long will our old receivers work?

I have been through a nightmare with direct tv with my older hughes receivers needing to updated (by them) as they say soon they will not work. From what I have read due to my home address and zip code they are going to move to a new satellite for the local channels which I do not get on my single lmb setup in my Coach anyway. So I am wondering if my set up will not be affected in my Coach and it will just happen at my address (home) which everything is based on with them. When they went to upgrade my equipment for my Coach thier computer system sent out HD receivers (based on my home address) but I don't have the set up for HD receivers in my Coach and won't get local channels with a single lmb head. Direct tv can not override thier system to send me sd recievers due to my home location.(doesn't matter that they are going in my Coach) They sent me 4 hd receivers and I had to send them back. So I was wondering if someone had knowledge of how long or if the signal will ever stop for the older single lmb satellite signal from them?

I believe you have asked this question on multiple forums and have already gotten answers. The HD receivers will work fine in your RV unless they happen to be the SWM-only variety and even those could be made to work with a few modifications. I seriously doubt if DirecTV will stop broadcasting SD channels any time soon and those are all you need for your single LNB system.

Thank you for your reply again, I have only posted one thread on this subject and was looking for more answers from folks. The new HD receivers from direct tv might work with some more additions to the wiring and so forth, but the D-12 SD receivers would be a direct replacement for the setup I have now but they won't send them to me. I can buy them from direct tv for $69.00 each and have them sent to my home and install them with "no modifications" to my system but they won't send them to me per the requested "free upgrade" to my equipment per a email I received from them. So I was again just looking to gain some knowledge from other that are going through this with direct tv.

I don't have any idea how long they will work but I sent for a replacement last week and have it running now. We like you can't get any local channels on our dome either. I just decided, we could use the new remotes to operate both vizeo tvs without the headache of additional remotes. Hooks up the same way as the old Hughes unit and tv reception is good.

Try calling back until you reach an agent receptive to your needs. We had to replace our old receiver mainly because it wasn't compatible to the dish system in our new motorhome. The first 3 times I called the agent said it needed to be installed by an "authorzed contractor". The 4th time I called I explained to the agent that the motorhome was stored 30 miles from our house and I couldn't take the chance the "authorized contractor" would be able to make an appointment within the time the motorhome was allowed at the house per the neighborhood association restrictions.

Actually my experience with contractors is poor so I wanted to do the job myself. In the end the agent agreed to send a specific model receiver to my home address so I could install it myself. The unit came Fedex a couple days after our conversation. I installed it myself and it's working fine.

Unless the new receivers are the very latest SWM-only ones (and they can tell you that on the phone), there would not be any wiring changes required to use them. The HD receivers are looking to get an HD signal your system can't supply so they will have to make do with SD. I was doing the same thing a few weeks ago when trees blocked the HD satellites and all I could receive was SD.

Did they send you the D-12 receiver with the coxial inputs/out.puts on the rear or did they send you the D-24 HD receiver with the HDMI/RCA plugs on the rear? With the D-24 receivers the sent me I would need 2 RF modulators to take the RCA jacks to coaxial and then install A a&b switch so I could also have campground locals if wanted. the local cable goes through my hughes receiver now and the D-24 does not have this input port.

I have spent several hours with operators, technical support, supervisors, etc. and they all cannot override their computer system to send me the SD receivers. They have tryed to override it and in 2 different orders I received 4 D-24 receivers and after more calls they had to send labels to return all 4 receivers. Even the tech department says with my set up I need the D-12 and it is a direct replacement upgrade for the system I have, but again their computer due to my home address sends me the D-24 receivers. Tech department said last time to buy them myself and get new cards for them. But I read this weekend that the satellite for the local channels is moving to another satellite is the reason for the change/upgrade so I am hoping that my SD receivers will work for some time to come. Thanks for you input.

I believe that is what the D-24 receivers are, only HDMI/ RCA jacks, no coxial hookups on the rear.

You might try talking to a retail vendor like this one:

Satellite Equipment* -*DIRECTV Receivers - Shop at SolidSignal.com - Page 1

They will provide you with whatever you ask for.

However keep in mind DirecTV and their authorized agents no longer sell any equipment. Since 2006 they only lease equipment. You usually pay $69.00 - $99.00 up front then a monthly fee depending on what type of equipment you lease. Even if you do buy something from another company they still charge a monthly fee equal to what the monthly lease payment would be to hook it into their system

They sent the one with with coaxial in/out just like the old one. The RV is the only receiver we had that was non HD.

Can DirecTV override... YES, but you will still loose local channels.. Do their phone zombies know how to override. I seriously doubt it, Last time I dealt with Direc it took like 20 calls and the last one threatening to find someone who even know what an RV was. (You transfer me to KVH again I'm calling DISH).

Page 2: The new receiver **SHOULD** (not will but should) work with the existing antenna, select "ROUND" antenna from the menu IF IT IS NOT GRAYED OUT, if it is, send the receiver back with a request for one where it will work.

However you won't get locals, you may not get Distant Network and you won't get HD

The reason is most local stations have gone HD and DirecHD is not compatable with your existing antenna.

Option 2: Use a ground mount tripod. I always recommend you have a tripod in reserve for when you are parked under the evil signal eating tree.. This might work. but not in motion, NO in motion system works with DirecHDTV.

Option 3: Dish Network.
Your existing antenna MIGHT work with a single Dish receiver such as a vip-211K depending on the antenna (manual antennas will work, automatic (including domes) might depending on the controller it uses, I can not be sure without doing research and .. Well. it's your antenna).

Some you need to push buttons, some flip switches, some inside some on the roof, some will auto-switch satellites some will not, some can not get 129 (HD bird) some can (mine can not)

But DISH is the only service fully dome compatable and then only if you have a SINGLE receiver (or if you have multiple receivers or a dual-input DVR, multiple domes).

I'll be getting a new fully automatic dome some day soon, then I'll re-activate my Dish network (Dish for my RV so I can not activate if I don't wish to)

Just replaced 2 OLD RCA DRB Receivers with 2 D-12 (FREE - NO CHARGE) receivers as a "test" which turned out fine. In fact this week (Friday) I will be converting 4 Bricks & Sticks only SD Receivers over to HD (1 HR24-700 & 1 HR20-700 & 2 H25's) plus the Pizza Oven Satellite Dish to a SWM Only SlimLine 5 antenna.

Here's a "Secret" in dealing with the "Right Customer Service" group at DirecTV, and that is do NOT call the 1-800-531-5000, you'll only get the 1st line CSR's who have NO Authority to do or decide anything. Call the Acees Card Department Directly at 1-877-887-7994. Those folks KNOW what's what and what is possible, and then if something is questionable, a supervisor is always available and willing to consider and decide. I use/used this number to call and verify eBay "Listed as Owned" receivers RID numbers as qualifying as Really Owned and Account in Good Standing prior to Bidding/Buying, then ordering a new access card @ $20 a pop. I prefer owning my own equipment plus it negates a new two year commitment contract with DirecTV. And these folks are night and day different from the 1-800-531-5000 folks, i.e., really wanting to be helpful customer service oriented to maintain your continued business relationship.

Thank you very much for the last postings, this is the information I have been looking for. Phone numbers and tips on how to straighten this mess out. I will call the card aacees dept.

UPDATE: called card access dept. talk to a super guy named Mike, best person that I have ever talked to at direct tv............He could not over ride the computer system (I was on hold for app. 20 minutes) to send me the sd receivers that I need. He told me that he was sorry but the easiest way to go fo me is to buy D-12's and then get cards for them. He said sooner or later my old receivers will quit working! Saga goes on ..........
