Thanks everyone for the replys. This is all very useful information. We are not sure what we will end up with. We have about one month to make a decision before taking off.

Best

A lot depends on the quality of the video.. I have seen low res stuff go a quarter Gigabyte per hour, I've seen high rez hit 3-4 Gig per hour, and normal is about a gig on my MP-2 boxes and on the MP4s I download from time to time.

Which reminds me I need to download an hour's.

I do not know if Netflix et-al allow you to choose resoltion like Ham nation and Amateur Logic do but, this I do know.

Video eats bandwidth.

Netflix allows you to select playback settings in your 'personal account.' Low is 0.3 GB/h, Medium (standard) 0.7 GB/h, High (HD) 3.0 GB/h. (All are maximum rates) You can also choose 'Auto' to have Netflix send at max your connection can handle.

I watch Hulu (free, not Hulu+), NetFlix, and a lot a YouTube, plus facebook and a lot of web browsing. Looking at my usage charts over the last year (Cox cable internet connection at home), I average around 20-25 Gigs per month. I've never gone over 30 and only rarely go below 20. I'm using this as the basis for what I need in the way of data when I go full time later this year. I don't have cable TV at home (broadcast only). I use a USB TV tuner card for my DVR. I will probably get Dish Satellite TV when I go full time, but that is an option, not a requirement. A good internet connection with 25 Gigs/Month minimum and a fast speed (I hate buffering when watching a video) is required.

What providers (internet) does everyone here use and what are the horror stories? I'm more interested in hearing the bad ones than hearing the good stories. The bad experiences usually give more and better information on what can be expected than the good stories.

Since this will be as "new" customer, I obviously won't be able to use "grandfathered" data plans. I will be mainly traveling the American Southwest with occasional forays into the Southeast and up to the Canadian border areas.

Under the new plan, this is how it goes:

"A Millenicom account allows for 20GB of data transfer per month. In the event more than 20GB are required, an additional block of 20GB of data can be purchased. Unless the purchase of additional data has already been authorized by the client, service ceases to function once 20GB of data usage is reached."

So, if you need more, buy more or authorize automatic billing.
