I have it and it's not too good and way overpriced for what you get. It's one step better than dial up is about the only good thing I can say.

Hi
Have you looked into verizon broadband? You can get a USB and plug in into your computer and have internet access anywhere-as long as you have signal on your cell phone

An IT tech friend of mine had it: He says it is over priced, slow, and under supported! He know has a verizon broadband (USB).

We are "former" Hughes Net customers. We just upgraded from Verizon's USB to their new WIFI router - it is much faster than both Hughes Net and Verizon's USB products. Same monthly charge of about $60 and will accommodate up to I believe 5 pcs. We are very happy w/it.

For the best information on the net about using Hughesnet in a mobile application you should visit www.datastormusers.com . Satellite internet still remains the only service that will work for you not matter where you travel (with a clear view of the Southern sky). That means it will work in the US including AK, Canada and Mexico. This gives you vast areas of coverage where no cellular voice or data exists as well as coverage where the data coverage is still very poor. Where you like to travel and what kinds of data needs you have will determine whether Hughesnet is right for you.
In areas where cellular service is good it is generally better than Hughesnet since you don't have to send a signal to a satellite 22,300 miles away and make that trip up and down 2 times for each page request, however for anyone to describe it as being close to dial up service has forgotten what dial up was like! Average speeds with Hughesnet are 100-150 upload and 600-1000K download.

I just bought a Verizon aircard and Cradlepoint wireless router. We are very happy with the service so far. By purchasing the aircard outright, you can get a month to month plan if you don't need full time service.

Don't believe it folks, that's what they tell you to get you to buy the service. In the real world you'll get less than half of what is called average.

Here's an actual speed test from Speedtest.net that I did on mine a few minutes ago and it's typical of what I get all the time. 730K down and 290K up. It ain't what they crack it up to be.

Richard,

I'm confused. Your 290K upload speed appears to be better than the 100 - 150K promised while your 730K download speed is in the 600 - 1000K range quoted. So, why is this performance only half as good as promised?

Rusty

Hughes net is 2-way Satellite internet.. Speeds are close to DSL most of the time if you are properly set up.. However since the signal has to go all the way up to Geo-Sync and back ..... Twice.... THere is a 1/2 second minimum PING time to any remote host here on the ground... This bothers some folks.. and some software.

I do agree with the original reply that it is over priced..

But.... You know the Verizon comicerals (I meant to spell it that way).

Well. The Hughes coverage map looks a whole lot like a map of the country.

There is not much (at least in the main-48) where you can't see the birds.. And when you can't it is usually either a tree or building in the way or a nearby RFI source (IE: Radar detector, or building security) that is blocking reception.

Note the latter violate Part 15 FCC rules but hey... You can not do anything about that since techinically you don't fully comply either.

There is no point in discussing a comparison of any home based internet service with what might be available to an RVer.
Comparisons would be dial-up, wi-fi, cellular or satellite.
If I had a 3000 mile long coax cable that would allow my cable/DSL connection to follow me around the US I would never use anything else.
